In his opinion maybe he was. Maybe he felt that if Calgary wanted him so bad they would have put in a higher offer to begin with instead of having drag it out of the Flames. Something pissed him off.

Leave 17m on the table to sign with the flames of the east... maybe he’s missing something upstairs?
Good riddance and good luck

He signed for barely more AAV than the supposed "low ball"

Not mad at Treliving anymore. He was dealing with a moron in Gaudreau. Can’t fault Treliving as much.

Their very first offer was $250K per year less than what he accepted (presumably not a lowball?). And it was $15.75M more in total dollars.
If he got PO’d at that, that’s on him.

I feel like I'm jumping into the viper's nest here but....
If the claim is true that it was a family "decision" then lots of the posts here are simply ignoring it and pointing the finger right at the player. Maybe there are other factors involved here that we just don't know about. Maybe his wife has a role lined up at the pediatric hospital in Columbus?
The guy, by most accounts, left a considerable amount of money on the table from Calgary and New Jersey (maybe others?). We can see that his decision was not about money and not about winning - maybe it was a family and human decision. As a husband and a father, I can see how that could drive someone to make a decision that looks illogical to outsiders.
Anyways, food for thought.

Have we decided:
1. Is Calgary actually that horrible of a place to play to leave almost 20M on the table to go to Columbus?
2. Did the Gaudreau camp simply miscalculate their value?
3. If the Gaudreau camp actually did miscalculate, why didn’t Calgary offer 10 x 7 today? Or did they?
|
1. No.
2. Yes,
3. Because #### him. He embarrassed the organization and the city, he can #### off back to Ohio for 7 years, a lower AAV, and less take-home pay.
And don’t think for a second every guy on this roster isn’t gonna have a couple extra hard, dirty slashes for Johnny’s hands for at least the next two years.

I suspect this hasn't gone the way the Gaudreau/Gross team hoped it would. But he wanted to go East. He went East and is near his home. My interest in him is over.

In fairness, don’t you think $15M dollars worth of spite is a little hard to wrap your head around? If he was angry with the org, he better be upset about a lot more than feeling like balled 6 years ago and the first offer. Some real serious transgressions need to be going down in the Flames org if the driver of this is spite.
It’s hard to believe that can even be a factor.

We dodged a huge bullet here. This is clearly a player who does not prioritize winning, if he did he either would have stayed here or signed with NJ who have a very bright future. Instead he signed for less to play for a mediocre team with an organization nobody wants to stay at because nobody cares about the Blue Jackets. As Garth Brooks said, sometimes God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.

It's categorically untrue. Calgary is a very fine city, but it doesn't really compare to many major American cities.
Now Columbus on the other hand...not sure about that one.

Spite for the team that gave you a chance in the NHL when everyone said you were too small, doubt it.

Well, at least on his wife, you are saying she lined up a job and then told her husband to approach the Blue Jackets just assuming they were even interested in a deal, and then told him to accept $15M less and also to avoid NJ’s offer?

My perception of Gaudreau has changed drastically. Maybe it was the small stature and meekness that made him come across as an honest guy with character. In reality, he seems like a complete rat and a moron who couldn't care less about winning.
I hope Tkachuk gives him a "warm" welcome the next time the two teams play each other.

Hmm. Wonder if this shows there's too much pressure in the Flames dressing room. This is the second star level player that has left to go to a place with less pressure (the other is D. Hamilton). Not every player responds well to psychological pressure. Some play better in a relaxed environment.

They are likely pondering the impact of Glee on all of this.

Calgary is not as great as the biggies - NYC, Chicago, LA. And depending on your mindset Nashville and Vegas. But it compares well to Phoenix, SJ, Seattle, TB (depending on what you like in a city) and is certainly better than Detroit, Columbus, Buffalo, Washington (unless you are Dougie Hamilton because the Smithsonian is awesome), Miami.
