I guess all I can say is that being a Flames fan for 30 years has prepared me well for a moment like this.

I'm coming around to the view that he really only wanted to play in Philly, and didn't find out that was impossible until he had already burned his bridges here. So he panicked and took the next plausible offer he could get.

If I’m Coleman I’m pissed.
Supposedly Gaudreau played a big role in recruiting him, Coleman probably could have went home to Dallas.
Then Gaudreau leaves a year later.

After living in the other thread of darkness for days and days and becoming pretty tired of the circular posts, I have to say this thread is a legit ray of sunshine. Laughing my head off at some of the comments. Cathartic stuff. This is why I love this group.

The only flaw in that is I can't figure out what happened to NJD.

I’m 100%,with you on this. My thought is, growing up a Flyers fan, you hate NJD. Like us becoming NHL’ers and signing with Edmonton. You take a minor haircut to not have to play for a team you hate so much. Glencross did it, he was an Alberta boy. Only after Edmonton upset him and didn’t offer him a deal when they chased Vanek. Out of spite, he signed in Calgary and it worked out for him.

Oh I get it now, Ohio is always an important state in the U.S. elections and Johnny wants to influence the outcome

- Mess up by the Flyers who knew since JG was in his junior year at BC he could be theirs in 7-10 years, which is today, for free.
-Mess up by other even remotely interested teams out east that he could be available and to have space. Maybe he didn't want to play for NJ becuase of his allegiance to Philly. Same with NY. Rivalry matters.
-Massive miss by his agent throughout the process in reading the market
-Miss by JG sticking with Gross after (or before) this.
He won't spend 7 years in CLB, he'll be on the Flyers in 2 or 3 and maybe that's part of the play here...go somewhere closer to home, get the big contract, play a couple years in anonymity and then make a move to Philly when they have their house in order.
It's the only explanation, I can't see him agonizing over his Flames legacy or closer to family meant so much if it was CLB he targetted the whole time.

####, it’s getting ugly in here. I honestly won’t go there, especially when someone is making personal choices based on family.
All I’ll say is good luck Johnny, thanks for the memories.
I think his departure opens up possibilities to move the team in a new direction and provides opportunities for others. Maybe this opens up spots for guys like Phillips.

Maybe NJD is to Johnny what the Oilers are to us?

Flyers fans dislike NJ, but they hate the Pens, Rangers and Caps more. This is more like a Flames fan signing in Winnipeg.
I don’t think this comes into it at all actually. Players are pretty rational about other teams.

Maybe but I don't know if an agent would advise a client to take an offer out of panic. Maybe one day we will find out exactly what went down in the last 24-48 hours but I doubt any light will be shined on this today as it's all just speculation and people scratching their heads.

People can do whatever they want, I am fine with that. You do you.
But watching him sign for less money and a worse team, and a nothing destination leaves me thinking bu-buy. I won't boo him, but no ovation, no Gaudreau night, nothing.
Just go.

Others have mentioned this earlier but if this is the truth, then why not sign a tradeable contract with a tight NTC clause with only Philly (and NJD) on it?
That would buy Philly time to clear the cap space and get him to his ultimate destination.

Clearly this is due to Johnny's wife being pregnant.
Mrs. G: "I have a craving..."
JG: "Yes fine, pickles and ice cream, I'll g-..."
Mrs. G: "... to live in Ohio."

And if there is anything to the one person in the org thing that prevented him from signing. It would have to be a massive values transgression type of thing for me to think the club should have done anything about it.
If it’s just Tre was tough in the last negotiation (imo no chance) or he didn’t like Sutter, then I say it was time for Johnny to move on. Btw I don’t think there’s likely anything too that speculation.
