That's the baffling part, he could've had that eighth year. There was no need to string the Flames along.

Who knows what is true or not, the insiders also said that NJ negotiations were going strong until they hit a "snag"

There’s no evidence Columbus was even in play prior to UFA time. So Gaudreau maybe rejected Calgary in favour of teams that really weren’t going to offer like he thought and then got stuck.

It's all easier to try to make sense of these now that this has happened. Seems like there are some grains of truth here.
A friend of mine used to be a manger at National on 10th, and Johnny and Monahan spent a LOT of time there around at one point, but that was like 2016-18ish.

Dont know if its the case with Johnny because i have no idea, but its a thing among some players and that is its not necessarily Calgary that is the issue, but the country.

A LOT of guys were really unhappy with the COVID restrictions here compared to below the 49th.

There may be another wave coming....and more lockdowns etc.

Is that enough of a deterrent to leave 15-18M on the table?

Maybe for some....though its hard for me to wrap my head around.

Where do people think Columbus is?
I wouldn't discount the fact that 66 of their games will be in the Eastern time zone, with 6 others only one hour ahead in the Central. Plus overall travel in the East is a lot easier. More nights getting home to sleep in your own bed after a single game out of town.

Not sure how Ohio taxes compare to say, New York, New Jersey or Philly. I think they're pretty high in all 3 of those states, and Philly used to have a city income tax too.

Exactly this. Which lends itself to the idea that Johnny was unhappy with the Flames organization for some reason. Didn't want to help them in any way.

This has to be a move where he doesn’t want to be critiqued on a day to day basis and just wanted a peaceful life. Fair. But burning bridges with the Flames tells me he wasn’t a fan of management. What a guy.

Makes no sense. Columbus has the same issues with big city fun as Calgary. Next to no big league sports, boring city. Etc. bad weather.

Playoffs are too hard for him.

He's not a winner. He plays for money and fun.

Well have it Johnny.
