Panarin’s $11.6M of the 2019 cap of $81.5M is 14.2% of the cap.
It’s the price of poker.
8x$11.7M, deliberately giving him a higher AAV than Panarin, with the extra year, to finish his career with the team who gave him his shot.
Just like Eichel, they had to make an offer the other side couldn’t refuse.
They didn’t. They made an offer that was apparently quite easy to refuse.
So Eichel is a Golden Knight, and Gaudreau is potentially a… Blue Jacket.
But neither are Flames.

Why are people so concerned about flights? Johnny will have the money to fly private and his family won’t be sitting in the lounge for hours. I’d always assumed this was purely about living practically next door, not about shaving an hour or two off a monthly flight.

Somebody clearly doesn't know how pro sports contracts work, beginning with the part where you have to have money to spend money.

So is that why the Blue Jackets are offering him $500k less than McDavid?
Stars don’t take discounts. Cry poor to Michael Stone when you bring him back for another year at $725k. You either have Johnny Gaudreau or you don’t. It costs to keep him. If you’re not willing to pay, fine.
Make the appropriate moves that are best for the franchise.
Don’t do this.

Right. I assumed it was "Mom, can you come over and look after the baby for an hour". Not "Let's get together for this weekend when I'm not on the road".

Leaving hockey aside (and there is actually a strong argument that CBJ has a brighter future), why would it be wrong for him to take the middle option?

We do know that Panarin is a poor comparable for any contract being signed now, because the circumstances have changed for the whole league.
|
Well we know that there have been other contracts that have been signed for big dollars since COVID (Nurse, Barkov, Werenski, Kaprizov, Point, Hamilton) The change in circumstances do not seem to have affected those contracts.

No one said every other day, but even once a week would probably be about $10-20K per month which isn't exactly a budget breaker when you have $120 million in career earnings.

He should take whatever offer he wants.
My only point of curiosity is what the nhlpa/agents guild will think of it IF he takes a big apparent discount to make this move.

No $10M pouty player with a reconstructed neck who is only a PPG guy.
And Calgary didn't have the assets to match Vegas anyway. No Tuch, no Krebs, both of whom were very much desired by Buffalo.

According to rumour. You're acting like this is not only a fact, but that it is guaranteed Gaudreau will sign there.
You also assume he is motivated solely by money and will automatically sign with whichever team offers the highest AAV.

I would buy a private jet and hire a pilot. Have it making money for me when I'm not working and available when I need it. Hondajet specifically.

Once a week isn't what people were thinking as "close to home". It sounds like rationalization to me.

A private jet rental is not the same price as a business class seat.

Not a huge deal anymore. Back when you had stars players having to have second jobs while the owners were making bank it was obviously important to have a unified front with the likes of Lindsay and friends.
Now though with 50% revenue split, the less Gaudreau signs for the more for everyone else. Only the top tier players who want to use his contract as a negotiation tactic (and therefore take money off lower level players) will care.

The rumoured offer was higher than any of those though.
