As a Flames fan, I'm sad to see Johnny go, but what's sadder to me is what could have been. Johnny could have seriously challenged a lot of team records, had his jersey retired, and celebrated as one of the greatest Flame ever to wear the uniform. Now, he'll just be remembered as the guy who had a great start to his career in Calgary, and that's it.

Means nothing. They can kick JVR to a team with cap and still get it done which is exactly what I think he is waiting on. If he was signing in NJ it would have been done. A two hour drive to get home after every home game vs a 20 minute one in Philly. He will wait until the Flyers figure it out, it's where he has always wanted to play.

This has no impact on Johnny, If Philly was willing to give up Konency for spare parts and minimal cap coming back and similar with Provorov. Depending on those pieces they can dump JVR for the rumored ask of 23 1st rounder to Chicago or Arizona or even Calgary

That's a lot of cap.

There is no absolute value in a market. There is only conditional value dependent on participants.

Second, the Flames' offer was about getting Gaudreau to forgo free agency. Now he's a free agent and nobody needs to pay him to give it up

Third, he has painted himself into a corner where only three teams, and maybe only two, are in a position to bid on his services.

He has drastically restricted his market power.
This is the interesting angle now imo. He'll make money regardless, but what's the urgency for NJD to offer large $$$? They must have their ear to the ground and know if Philly has a move to open the space. If not, then NJD is basically the only game in town. I guess NYI could come in, but hard to see them bidding it up this early because they also have incentive to wait and see if Philly can be involved.

Good luck to Johnny. Will be interesting to see if he left even more money on the table than he was expecting.

I would actually bet this coming year will be down for him, whether it were in Calgary or elsewhere.

Huge contract means adjusting to massive expectations, and he shoulders a lot of pressure. Add-in the world-turning-upside-down event of a new baby... I think he's going to have a rough year coming up.

Flames were not going to win a cup with a $6mil Gaudreau, they definitely weren't going to win with an $11M Gaudreau.

Hopefully they make the correct decision and rebuild, but being the Flames I look forward to many 12-13 overall draft picks in the coming decade.

Jarmo Kekäläinen is a mad man with a blank cheque. Its under a 2 hour flight from home.

I actually wonder how much the timeline affected the "Plan B." Plan B is probably re-signing Tkachuk, Mangiapane and Kylington. Plan B is also probably promoting Mackey, Valimaki, Ruzicka and Pelletier. Plan B is also keeping Monahan and Lucic.

Johnny affects none of that

It usually takes time for a new player to get acclimated to a new team, new environment. For example I think Coleman will be better next season for the Flames.

I actually like the idea, but the dislikes on a post should only be visible to the poster who made the post. This would eliminate bullying and posters ganging up on people with controversial or bad takes.

But it would also allow for feedback

Yep, and throw in a new baby on top of that... even with his money, and family help, going to be lots of sleepless nights at home, along with stress with the Mrs. as she is stuck with a baby while he is travelling on the road to games.

Also, as an uFA I think would you make the team you select weaker for the benefit of the Flames.

Curious to note that the Flames tweeted out a "good luck and so long" to Erik Gudbranson...and so far, from what I can see.....public radio silence on Johnny except for BT's presser.
