I don't blame Gaudreau for making a family decision. And, being a family decision of course his wife has a say, maybe a big one. It happens. It's why Mike Stone is here, not that he's a guy who had a lot of choices, but what he had was affected by that.
I do think that he probably gave Treliving some incorrect signals by indicating he'd be willing to stay in the right deal (something he's consistently said for three years at least), negotiating on contracts last summer and then essentially saying, "nah, let's wait until next year, but then we'll get to work on one" and by negotiating until the last minute here. It sounds to me like he (or maybe Gross) were either trying to raise the dollar amount being discussed just to take to other teams or get Treliving to make some absolutely crazy offer, like 8x$12+.
To the extent there was risk in not trading him last summer, it still seems like it was acceptable risk, even in hindsight. Based both on the mediocre return and the one season results. Like someone said, he became a one season rental.

That was likely the case that the wife and parents ultimately determined this. Family decision remember. Over dollars even, as he won't get what he would've with the Flames
It's not blaming her, it's pointing out that he didn't exemplify the fortitude to put his hockey career interests above the interests of those around him.
Letting family decide the direction of your career isn't the actions of a strong man. And maybe Gaudreau just isn't that. Wherever he signed, he wasn't going to be kept away from his family at the end of the day. And its not like they've been suffering for the past 8 years.

Don't care how much money he makes.
Leaving the team as a free agent which was his right doesn't mean your family deserves hate and vitriol.
Just accepting it and not calling stuff like that out is why it continues to be an issue. Embarrassing for anybody in the fan base to do that today.

Your posts today have been laughable.
Calling Gaudreau immature and now questioning his fortitude and manhood because he put his family first.
Doing what's best for your wife and soon to be newborn child and prioritizing that over money is the mature thing to do and means he does have the right priorities.
Honestly he has no better shot at team success in Calgary than he does in New Jersey either.

It sucks, but this is the reality of being a public person on the internet, and twitter in particular. Cesspool.

Man that's a brutal post.
"Letting family deciding the direction of your career isn't the actions of a strong man. And maybe Gaudreau just isn't that".
You are making a massive assumption about how the decision was made, and then you are suggesting what that says about him "as a man".
This stuff is toxic.
So yeah this is the stuff I was talking about. Not a good look. Pretty damn ugly in fact.

I don't think he's signing with Calgary anymore... but thanks for the memories, Mr. Hockey. Good luck wherever you go, but I will cheer against you as I am a Flames fan first.

You are calling Gaudreau not a strong man because he wanted to be by family/asked for their opinion? Nobody knows what the talks were in the Gaudreau family but I highly doubt he just went with whatever his family said. I'm sure that he wanted to be by family but what made it such a hard decision for him and took time was that he enjoyed his time in Calgary. Whether you make $11 M a year or 500 K a year, or 250 K a year, or 100 K a year or 50 K a year, family is still important.

I really think you have no idea what a man is if you think a real man puts the interests of Calgary Flames fans, the potential for a Cup with a team that has done sweet #### all over the past 33 years and potential long term glory as a Calgary hero over the interests of his wife and children. But that is just me.

Don't blame Johnny or his wife, blame the Flames for not building a true contender. That is the only advantage this city will ever have other than money.

What a crock of ####.
Considering the feelings and thoughts of others has nothing to do with strength. The guy comes from a tight family, and suggesting he’s not strong because he would like to be near them is complete BS. If anything he has my respect, puts his family first, takes responsibility, and made a perfectly appropriate choice. He’s going to get paid regardless.

Probably not, but it’s really the only logical option left. I don’t think anyone is saying she’s a bad person, she just has her own prerogative and sadly, it doesn’t jive with us. It’s actually understandable, she’s been here for what, a year? She doesn’t know anybody here, all her friends and family live out east, of course she’d prefer to go back especially pregnant and all. It’s really just the circumstance that’s screwed us over.
Johnny by himself though, seemed ready to sign on the dotted line. His ears perked up any time someone asked about him sticking around and breaking all team’s records. I’m very confident in saying that if Johnny found himself a Calgary girl, he would’ve re-signed a while ago.
So the real question is, how did no gal in Calgary sink their claws into Johnny? Surely there had to be one that was willing to take the plunge and take one for the team? The real blame should be on Calgary women. They had 7 years...FAIL.

Debatable, but you are probably right. Important to remember he's turning 30. He played his best years already and they were with the Flames. We may have actually dodged a bullet as $11MM @ age 34+ is going to be yikes for anyone.

Players sometimes leaves as FA's. It's not great, but you feel better when the club has a say in the decision. They made an offer, didn't feel it was worth it go higher etc. and the money could be better spent elsewhere.
This is different.
Gaudreau was Plan A. We are going to move heaven and earth to keep him. An obviously upset and disappointed GM faces the media. This was a big loss for the organization vis a vis their objectives. As fans we can make lemonade out of the fact that the contract may not have been worth it. But that's not what the org was thinking.
