assuming this stuff is even true, your boy Monahan would have been there every single night alongside him, so I guess by your logic is equally responsible for the bad Flames culture.

When told to do things (like Sutter) and when he knows he has to keep them informed (Gaudreau) Brad knows what he needs to do. I suspect most GM’s do that as well, it is just that I suspect for most GM’s what they say will happen usually does. I doubt Brad keeping the owners informed was “hey, if we don’t sign him or trade him this off-season there is a 80% chance we lose him” which seemed to be the common perception in most of the hockey world. I suspect Brad framed it as a 50/50 proposition.

You made it sound like he was a yes man and that's it.
We don't know that.
In fact I doubt it.
How do you know the consensus opinion of the hockey world? I would have had it at 50/50, and losing a coin toss doesn't mean you didn't have a 50% to win it when it was flipped.
My guess is they were fully informed on the risks, and decided to keep the player and not trade him for value they didn't think was right.

I am ok, thanks for the concern. I am a Flames fan, Gaudreau was my fav player but I cheer for the logo on the front, not the name on the back. This didn't gut shot me nearly as badly as when Fleury left who was my fav player growing up. That one sent me to sitting on my bed bawling like a baby. I got over it though. I am still optimistic about this team and am actually kind of excited to see what happens now that the team has some flexibility. I also want to apologize to any poster I offended with some of my posts, I can be a little too emotional and passionate about my thoughts, I will try and be a better poster going forward. One thing that unites us all is the passion for this team, go Flames go!

True. But I don’t think they have to put him out there. These guys talk and to old school hockey guys Tkachuk has a unique skill set and they’re probably proactively asking about him. No doubt BT already has a gauge on who’s interested, if not what his value is out there. Being an RFA is a tough spot to talk deals if teams don’t know what he’d settle for given he’s a Tkachuk after all. Anyway, I think the best trading partner given the potential return and win win on both sides remains Ottawa. Arizona would be ideal but I can’t see them going for it. But Ottawa looks like they’re trying (but with that goaltending a D will ultimately fail) which is why getting their 1st rounder is worthwhile for me.

I think he is a yes man on the things that matter. That buys him a lot of rope, rope he uses to skate by signings like Brouwer and Neal, along with the Hamonic trade. On a lot of teams, those two signings and trade, coupled with a decade of mediocrity would kill a GM’s career. It does not seem to affect BT, because I think he is an expert at knowing what issues he has to manage up.

All I know is the next legitimate super star who stays in Calgary his whole career is going to get a statue of him made in the city considering what the franchise has gone through.

Slept on this news, still woke up pissed off at Johnny for taking this to the last second and leaving the Flames in the worst possible position.
At this point he is getting boos from me.

Johnny adult was barely a 6.75M player in 2020-21.
Johnny adult was maybe the 9th or 10th best forward in the Edmonton series
McDavid, Draistl, Kane, Hyman, RNH, Backlund, Coleman, Mangiapane
In his last game as a Flame he was below replacement level.

I haven’t read all 22 pages but will do so at some point. For now I’ll just say this:
He arrived in 2014 as Johnny Hockey, a Hobey Baker winner and intriguing NHL prospect with incredible skill.
He leaves in 2022 as John Gaudreau, an elite NHL forward and a husband and soon to be father. Kids eventually have to leave home someday.

Thought Johnny would've individuated from mom and dad enough at this point tbh.
On one hand its good to honour your family and consider them, but on the other Gross said it was a family decision, and at 29 you can't have mom influencing your decisions any more. He's an adult and has the ability to make his own decisions and it looks like he went to his parents for approval and obviously mom would prefer him being closer.
That and leaving it to the last minute strikes me as kind of an immature handling of this whole thing.

It's not mom.. its his wife and their kid on the way.
I take it you're not married nor have kids? Not a jab, just a serious question.
There's nothing stronger than a women having their mom around when a baby is born. I can almost certainly tell you that the biggest decision was keeping his wife happy and close to her parents.

I think family decision means being somewhere close to family support for your wife and kids when you are on the road. I also think it means being home more often to actually see your kids. On the East Coast you can be home the night of probably 10-15 of your road games (depending on schedule). Overall in the season you probably see your kids an extra 20 days or so. Your wife has family support down the road to help with the kids.
Being someone with two your kids and who had a job that had me on the road often and living 3000km away from family support, I totally understand the value of raising your family near the rest of your family. I doubt it was because his mom made the decision for him.

Agreed. If he was serious about wanting to be at home that should have been made crystal clear to BT (and may have been) so Flames could make alternate plans for the draft. That is the ONLY part I'm pissed about. Highly unprofessional of both JG and his agent.

I don't think it's immature at all - and I don't think it was his mom and dad driving this decision. The rumor was his wife is pregnant and that changed the considerations.
A hockey player is on the road most of the year. Where do you think you'd rather have your wife and baby? Close to home with family as a support system or in Calgary where the only real support system is likely the other players and their spouses.
I have an 18 month old and I'm lucky enough to have my parents near by and my in-laws just moved from Ontario when she was 6 months because they wanted to be closer to their grandchildren.
And it has been amazing to have that support system around, especially for my wife.
He left upwards of $14M dollars on the table to do what's best for his family - if anything that is a very mature decision. I would have liked if he would have just made this clear from the minute the season ended but I think it was truly a tough decision for him, probably one he's still questioning today.

Johnny's dad has had heart issues the last couple years.
You never know with these kind of things.
If he wants to raise children and be able to see his family every week, can you really be upset about that? Have your kids grow up with your grandfather down the road?
Sounds pretty good. I can't imagine anything more important. Seems pretty mature to me.

I don't think it was entirely mom.
Wife is expecting first kid, w no family in Calgary. My wife did the same when we move to Regina. I'd be lying if I told you she wasn't anxious and nervous about the lack of help she'd have compared to living here.
