Feeling awful for everyone in the Flames organization who really wanted to get this done. Sounds like it was close and then turned as per Friedman.

McDavid is s tremendous individual talent, but I sure don't think he does a great job of seeing the whole ice and of using his line mates effectively. Most of his production is from willing plays into fulfilment, not from seeing the game three or four plays ahead of what is happening in the moment.

At least Feaster drafted Gaudreau. Drafted Monahan. Signed Hudler. Got 1sts for both Iginla and Bouwmeester.
Treliving has let Brodie, Gio and now Gaudreau walk out the door for nothing.
There is every indication he’ll make the same mistake with Tkachuk, and zero reason to allow him the opportunity to try.
It is quite possible he could lose every one of Gio, Brodie, Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Lindholm and Hanifin to leave as UFAs for not a single asset.
In the hands of the CP brain trust, never mind any other GM in the league, that collection of players is worth at minimum five 1st round picks and two 2nds, plus filler.
In Try-Hard’s hands, they’re worth nothing.
####ing embarrassing. What a dark day for this franchise.
|
It must be absolute torture for you knowing that Treliving will still be the Flames GM this time next year.

I understand Gaudreau's wish to be closer to his family, his wife is pregnant, they want to be somewhere near the new Grandparents, he is obviously incredibly close with his family and that's nice to see. It's definitely his choice to make, and I hope wherever he ends up he is happy with his new life with a new contract. I think the Flames honestly reached their high point last year with Gaudreau, I don't see our team getting much further than the second round in it's current iteration, even with one of the best coaches in NHL history at the helm.
Personally though, in the grand scheme of life overall, I think it's the wrong choice by Gaudreau. Giving up 10.5 million dollars is a lot of money for anyone, even a hockey player who's career will most likely be over at the end of this contract. He will be likely done as a player by 35, and then he will just be 10.5 million dollars poorer than he would have been. Seeing as it's unlikely this team will be in the cup final he still get's close to 3 months off, plus he will still be on the road for the half the NHL season regardless of where "home" is. If my wife and family saw an opportunity for me to have an extra 10.5 million dollars of lifetime earnings by the age of 35, but I would be away from home for a bit longer, I think my wife would likely question my sanity if I thought about passing up that opportunity. But hey, Johnny will be done at 35, living in Philly or NJ, and have the rest of his life after hockey to think about not having an extra 10.5 million dollars to play with.

…and in the unlikely event that it works, you'll have one decent player and nothing else.
If it doesn't work, you'll have a team with no decent players. If losing your best player is an epic fail, what do you call losing your best 10?
(And by the way, how will you feel if you beat Chicago in the lottery, but then Buffalo, Arizona, and Anaheim all beat you?)

The difference won’t be 10.5 in cash value, it’s closer to 3-4 million overall by the end of the contract. The difference is not 70 to 80.5, it’s 80.5 to 84 million.
Same total sum over a shorter term.

Someone find Cale Makar a wife at Stampede and get him to come home when his contract is up.

Even with teams rumored to be offering less than 10.5 a season?

I can’t say for certainty but I would believe any team signing Johnny tomorrow is looking at 11.5X7. I would be shocked if it was any lower.

Fair point. I guess I just saw the tweet about what NJ was prepared to offer, and it looked significantly less than 11.5 BUT as you are alluding to and is customary teams will be bidding against each other and likely free agency effects will influence the overpay. It's still a gamble in my opinion.

Haha, treiliving deserves this.
Remember when Johnny had no options but to sign with the Flames last time and the Flames squeezed him? Well I'm sure Johnny did, he got his revenge...
Remember when Tkachuk was squeezed last time and had to wait last minute to agree to a deal? Well I'm sure Tkachuk does...
Remember when Mangiapane was squeezed last time...I'm sure Mangiapane does too...
I would have no loyalty to a guy who hands out free money to other teams UFAs while holding his own RFAs hostage. Kylington will be the same.
Onward and downwards with this team. They really should develop the "forever mediocre" slogan for upcoming years.

I'm not sure Treliving has the balls to trade Tkachuk. Popular opinion is that Tkachuk won't sign longterm. I'm worried Treliving will go into the season "confident Tkachuk will re-sign" and either lose him for nothing or trade him for pennies on the dollar at the deadlinr. The Flames have never been proactive with these kinds of things

If the Flames wanted to bring Johnny back, they should have thrown negotiation out the window IMO.
If you follow the rumor mill, they started at $9.5m AAV and worked their way up from there right to the wire today.
This is a loyal guy IMO, but he's also a Northeastern American guy with a pregnant wife who is also from that area, and both families too. He doesn't like to fly, and out there travel is a lot less cumbersome. He grew up a Flyers fan, the Flames have a ####ty old arena and no new one on the horizon anymore.
I mean, there was a million things pulling this kid back home and the longer this went on the more and more likely it got that he was a goner. It's easy to Monday morning QB but like I said, they should drawn a line in the sand and offered him $88 million a week or so after the season ended and given him a deadline.
"Johnny, this is our best offer. We get that you have time still, but we don't. We have a lot of fish to fry this off season. You are the biggest part of our team right now and we want you here for the rest of your career. We think we can win with you. But we can't wait until July 13th, we need to know right away so we can continue building around you ASAP"
Would i have worked? I don't know, but time was their enemy IMO given all the factors pulling him where he is now going to go.
But, ah well. He's going where his heart is now.

You mean If the Flames wanted to bring Johnny back, they should have thrown negotiation out the window last year. You can't risk having players explode with career years on the last year of a contract and then walk.

It is bad for all Flames fans, especially when Brad gasses the 1st rounder at the deadline because we are only 4 points out of the wildcard position and a chance to play the Oilers in the first round.

After waking up with a fresh perspective this morning...
I believe we can all comfortably blame this on Locke's wife.

Why would they sell all their players for one draft pick? Even Brad could get more than one ticket in the lottery for the Flames assets. He should be able to, he gave up about 16 tickets to the lottery to get the assets.
