Tkachuk and Hanifin ASAP. But Lindholm should be on the table too.

Silver linings on the day:
- We likely just witnessed the best season Johnny will have in his career, and the best Flames season in ages, all because Johnny wasn't traded before his NTC activated;
- The team won't be hamstrung paying a declining player 10 mil or more per season over the back half of an 8 year contract;
- It's not unreasonable to look at how things turned out this year and conclude that this group was unlikely ever to win a cup, and therefore the quicker we got to a re-tool or rebuild the better;
- The team still has good pieces for trade, and reasonable contracts remaining to build around, and could still be quite competitive as they metamorphose into the post-Johnny era;
- They have lots of cap space, with more on the way as contracts expire at the end of the season, putting them in good position for wheeling and dealing.

I'm sad and emotionally fragile.
The Flames's contention window just slammed shut.
Time to go scorched earth

If he goes to NJ and plays with Hughes then he probably gets 100 points.
Hughes will likely be the best center that Gaudreau has ever played with, he looked that good when not injured this past season.
If he goes to Philly to play for Torts…yeah probably not getting 100 points again.

Agreed. That's the next domino. Lindholm and Tkachuk aren't just run of the mill players, but if Tkachuk doesn't sign, don't do anything except fill the roster with mediocre junk and.then start selling the good stuff.

I think of this quite often. We will give him dollars and term, and he start a rapid decline when he gets to his late 20's. Players that skate like him don't typically play late into their 30's. I think we should trade him for value while we can.

Either way, the deadline to make up his mind was at the draft.
Not today.

For me, yes.
Lindholm
Hanifin
Tanev
Tkachuk
Toffoli
Backlund
Markstrom
All of those guys could feasibly fetch 1st round picks ++ in trades, which would be monumental for a rebuild.

Be upset, be disappointed, but Johnny did nothing wrong here. And frankly I don’t think the Flames did either. Saying they should have traded him earlier while using the power of hindsight is incredibly lazy.
Johnny was making a life altering decision for his family and the Flames didn’t want to lose their star player. Both sides did what they had to. Nobody did anything wrong.
I get it’s an emotional night but good lord some of you are ridiculously dramatic.

Out of thanks but I agree wholeheartedly

Trade all the Americans, except Coleman. No more yankees, they just give us trouble!

He owed the team and the city better than that.

I have every reason to believe he wanted to stay here. Then his family and parents entered the equation and clouded up his line of thinking. Should I stay or should I go now will haunt him for awhile as he moves on to his new team.

Maybe set up a pool. Start at 81 and go to 120? 1 dollar per point you sign up for. 40 spots. Obviously if you think he ends up with 120 points you're willing to gamble more. Exact points takes all and over or under transfer to next year?

If he does get 100 again it's likely in the next few years...not saying it's impossible but certainly not easy
A lot has to go right to put up 100 points in the league
Flames had a pretty unique schedule last season with a ridiculous homestand of tired teams after a month off mid season
For the record I was all for 8x11 and not saying he sucks just that 100 points is 100 points. I also don't love the teams he might go to.

The biggest factor is Johnny is starting a family. That's what changed folks. Last year he wasn't a pending father, he was a newly wed.
He wants to raise his kids around his and her families. He might be a professional athlete but he's still a human.
Accept it painfully, At least he didn't take 10.5 Million over 8 years if his heart wasn't in it. Maybe this was the last "difficult" phone call between Tre and John - No Gross.

Disagree, but not totally. There was always a chance he was going to leave, but getting married and ready for children near contract time helped. Had things been like this this 3 years ago he would already be signed to an extension. Plus he gambled. He bet on himself for an opportunity to get paid by more than one team and he won.
