Isn't the 2nd overall pick still available for Chucky? Can't the Devils just trade who they picked at #2 (among other pieces)? Why is it poor GM-ing if the pick has already been used? (Understanding that the Flames could have picked Wright).

It's the reasonable opinion. This organization doesn't know how to build a Championship team, so naturally they will not rebuild.

Foolish, as I just posted in the other thread, the team this season was s a one line team.

Here are Johnny’s season splits between wins and losses.

In Wins:
50gm - 32g - 61a - 93p

In Losses:
21gm - 5g - 8a - 13p

In OTL:
11gm - 3g - 6a - 9p

Just look at how reliant this team was on Johnny’s line just to win games. There’s an extremely high correlation between Johnny’s production and the competitiveness of this team.

The Flames need to be smart and jumpstart a rebuild ASAP. Don’t go all 2010-2013 Flames and then rebuild years later. Rebuild, try to get Bedard and make the rebuild quick. Don’t drag out the inevitable.

I mean he's not wrong, everyone thinks that's their game plan. Not everyone agrees its a good idea, but they didn't rebuild properly after Iginla, why would they do it now.

So in his presser did anyone ask BT if there was a formal proposal from the Gaudreau camp that the Flames simply wouldn’t meet?

It was Gaudreau's decision. That's what free agency means. SOME team was going to lose him for nothing – unless they traded him to Philly, which had no incentive to give up any assets to acquire him.

Not that I heard, the closest question was (paraphrasing):

"Were there multiple offers back and forth during discussions?"

And Treliving dodged it saying he doesn't discuss salary and contracts publicly.

Nobody actually knows how to build a championship team. You don't make it through four rounds of playoffs without luck, and there is no recipe for luck.

The draft is a lottery… you don’t try to get a player… you fail to give yourself more lottery balls. There is lots of cap space and assets to bring in players. Hell I think if you add Kadri and Kane you become faster and tougher to play against

Yeah, you 100% need luck. You also need to be very good to put yourself in a position to get lucky and get on one of those runs.

How are teams consistently good? By having a foundation built on high end picks.

I'm showing you there is at least a foundation that the recipe is built on by showing similarities between Championship teams. There is no guarantees in anything, but man...if you truly believe it's just luck? I don't know, I don't get the appeal of the sport at all then.
