I can't help but think some team is going to grossly overpay Palat. Nice player, but has only scored 20 goals in a season once, and that was several seasons ago. I realize he has a good 2-way game and is a good playmaker, but I just know some team is going to go overboard on him.

How much do you have to overpay a player to sign here tomorrow without Gaudreau?

Terrifying thought.

No to Malkin, he is a shell of his former self. Guy can’t skate anymore, and only plays in the offensive end.

Even if he was here they likely are not playing with him.

In all honesty I doubt it affects much, how often do we see bargains in free agency?

That's a frighteningly good point.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if we're spectators to the first surge at least of free agency and are looking at the scraps over the next week.

Could be forced into a rebuild due to lack of options more than anything.

I don't know about that. I don't fully buy into the whole maximizing assets and "it's a business" takes.

At the end of the day, this franchise treated Johnny really well and I really believe he thought hard about staying as a result of that. Treating your players - especially the ones you draft and develop - like they are purely assets to squeeze the most value out of is bad practice.

Vegas does that to their players - most publically with Fleury but also with guys like Tuch and Suzuki - and they are already getting a bad rep for that. I think it also affects players on ice, when they know their franchise just treats them as assets. I think it played at least a part in them missing the playoffs this year.

Yeah but there is really no good option out there

Honestly if they want to make a splash to remain competitive then Malkin would be awesome .

3 x $11M

Doesn’t hurt long term. Premier position. That would probably be best outcome.

I don’t think 2022 malkin is that much of a downgrade on 2022 Gaudreau in a lot of ways. In terms of durability and just pure offense, he is, but he’s an experienced winner, plays a more important position, could maybe even be your captain and has an edge to his game.

And this is coming from someone who sees very little positives about the whole Gaudreau leaving thing. I want no part of a Kadri/E Kane/etc as those guys are the guys who get bad ufa deals, but I think malkin is still a difference maker

Malkin would be a great add but I just feel we're a combination of outbid and not where he'll be interested to go.

LA is my guess for Malkin, would be NYR if they can figure out how to afford him

There is probably a 5% chance Malkin comes to Calgary. He's already said he's rich, so obviously money isn't that important. Calgary has nothing else to offer. Odds are he's signing out east.

Trade everyone, offer malkin 12 mil for 1 year and any other 1 year deals you can get done the sell more at the deadline.

The goal now should be to fall hard for Bedard, tank you very much.

Seems to be a rumour of Malkin staying in PIT for 4x6.1M

If the flyers are looking to offload JVR, it might not be the worst idea if the Flames use the cap space to pick up some picks.
