I’m not going to be gracious and wish him well. Johnny ####ed us. He has a contract offer and sat on it. He gave us a lot of sweet words at the end of the season but, if it wasn’t about money, he should have told Tre and let us get on with building our team. We could have made moves at the draft but we were frozen…waiting on him. He can GTFO.
I don’t disagree but there is just as much failure by the flames, whether it’s management or ownership, who refused to read the writing on the wall. They didn’t have the balls to give Johnny an ultimatum and kickstart a retool when they had the chance. Now they’re paying the price.
Even if the flames knew he was leaving a week ago, I doubt it makes much difference. Or two weeks ago. Almost no chance Chucky gets traded either way.
For better or worse, it would seem Flames ownership/management seem dead set against any retool or rebuild and want a perpetual playoff contender.

What are you talking about? Johnny is a fantastic hockey player that didn't request a trade, he should have been moved last year period. You can't lose a player of that caliber for nothing, we've seen this scenario happen in recent memory with JT.
Would have been nice to know for the draft. Darkest timeline might commerce. Tkachuk for ####ty spare parts and Flames over Kadri and some 3rd liner. Best time lime is Flame sign Malkin lol
To lose all of Gio, Brodie and Gaudreau for no assets in return is a painful reality no ifs and or buts. This Gaudreau one hurts though because this really has screwed Calgary going forward and had limited what they’re able to do here, personally it’s scary to think how close this is to UFA. I really hope they don’t make any knee jerk reactions here by Treliving.
Wtf is this? Brodie got us Tanev. Gio got us Kyilinton. Both were on their last legs.

We have many, many data points: top players do not want to play in Calgary.
ah man Johnny had to make a decision for himself. It’s his life.
Management’s job is to manage risks.
Management #%^*ed us. Just like they have for decades here in Calgary. An organization that has no real success has problems. It’s not on the individual players.
Of course it’s his life and he made a decision that worked for him.
I have no idea what Tre could have done differently. He couldn’t force Johnny to sign a deal this year or last year. He couldn’t read Johnny’s mind about whether he wanted to stay. He couldn’t trade our superstar as we were heading into the playoffs as projected contenders. He gave Johnny an offer a month ago and they sat on it. He couldn’t make any moves without any certainty provided by the Gaudreau camp due to the salary cap.

As much as this stings now.... hold your heads high, because in 2026, when a cupless, frustrated, #97 does the exact same thing to the Oilers, it will all seem better, and the Universe will return to balance.

Management's job is to hire the people who provide the product to the paying customers. Managing risk is worthless if there is no product worth paying for.

And honestly, I’m not even that upset. Johnny had a career year in a contract year. Like many guys before him, I wouldn’t be surprised if his production takes a hit once he’s set for life and signs his big money deal. Especially if he signs with a crap team like Philly or NJ. I’m more worried about the assets we could have gotten for him.

So you throw away our playoff chances last season for magic beans?
