Embrace the rebuild. Try to sign and trade Tkachuk, then dump Coleman, Toffolli, Backlund, and Tanev at the trade deadline. Bring up the prospects and build around a younger core.

I would rather pull off the bandage quickly and get 2-4 years of good draft picks instead of wallowing in mediocrity forever

Yea this is probably the worst day as a Flames Fan since I can remember. Maybe 2nd to getting screwed out of the cup in 2004.

I'm sad, angry, confused.
I don't hate Johnny for this, I do think it was completely Family related as soon as his wife got pregnant.

With that said I do think he could and SHOULD of handled this better, it clearly wasn't about money and he should of let us know before the draft. That's the only part that hurts deep.

What a sad day to be a Flames fan.

** You can hear Brad is emotional and upset like the rest of us here **

Waste of time I lost respect for him, he played the team to boost up his possible earnings out east. I don't believe this was a last minute decision. If he wanted to play closer to home should have just told the team after the playoffs. It would have hurt to hear he didn't want to resign, but I would have respected him for it. I will always cheer for the Flames, but #### Gaudreau.

Then they better manage risks better than Treliving has.

This is one of the biggest failures in organizational history.

“You understand the risks when you go into this” Tree just said.

Yeah, so you understood it and you #%^*ing failed.

The Flames did this. You can either be the nice guy franchise and get screwed, or you have the foresight to make tough decisions when required. They took a risk and got burned.

What a non answer by Treliving, though I guess he can't outright admit... I trucked up and made a bad decision.

Wrong. You give him a hard deadline of the draft, then you trade. But that takes some cajones and some brains, neither of which Brad has in abundance.

To lose all of Gio, Brodie and Gaudreau for no assets in return is a painful reality no ifs and or buts. This Gaudreau one hurts though because this really has screwed Calgary going forward and had limited what they’re able to do here, personally it’s scary to think how close this is to UFA. I really hope they don’t make any knee jerk reactions here by Treliving.

True sign of a pretty horrible GM. He has had what?! 6 years to confirm and know whether he was going to sign?

With not doing any background work on Peters.. losing guys like Brodie and Giordano for nothing.. and now Gaudreau -- maybe he is just not that great at reading people.

End of an era. Thanks for the memories, John. Wish you had informed the club earlier as it really feels like this was the direction you were taking all along. Would have allowed Treliving to negotiate RFA & pending UFA contracts with a clearer picture.

I'm going against the grain but I don't think we were winning the cup with 10+ million tied up in Gaudreau when we weren't able to do it when he was making less. The makeup of this team doesn't have what it takes to go all the way but that doesn't mean a team with Gaudreau wouldn't have been fun to watch over the next 5-8 years...

Bittersweet. Time for serious consideration of a rebuild but we know ownership won't go along with that.

If Johnny didn’t want to sign this year for family or location reasons, then he didn’t want to sign last year either. Takes 2 parties to sign a contract. It takes 2 parties to make a trade. If Johnny only wanted specific teams, then other teams would know that as well and wouldn’t trade to get themselves in the same position the Flames found themselves in. Sometimes it does not matter how good (or bad) BT did his job. Sometimes circumstances are simply not workable. And remember we didn’t lose him for nothing. We now have $10m in cap room. That is a huge asset.
