That Tkachuk contract is another great example of when the franchise needed its GM to play hardball and get the team a better deal that didn't result in this one-year RFA season with a massive QO required.

Tell that to the people who figured Treliving had to trade Gaudreau last summer (in hindsight only of course).

Very easy choice. It's not franchise crippling to pay your top player 1.5M more than expected. (And really who expected 9.5M for the #2 scorer in the league) almost seems like some posters are hedging their bets to complain either way.

Two questions
1) do you think Johnny is worth it to be paid the highest on the team for the next eight years? If so do you see him in the same ilk as McDavid and Mackinnon?
2) what average point production do you see from him for the next eight years to make that contract valid? What production would be a disappointment?
I keep saying I think he’s a great number two on a championship team. The elusive number one is missing. Just because he’s the best player on the team doesn’t justify the $11M price tag. If it handcuffs you in the future let some other team make a mistake. It’s a sunk cost.

You are correct he's a great #2 on a championship team.
But do you think the extra 1.5$ million we would pay him is what is stopping us from getting that superstar #1....

Matthew Tkachuk & Johnny Gaudreau Signing Watch Thread

Due to that 8th year, unless he can get a team to really pay up the wazoo AND keep Johnny happy, then his best bet is still with Calgary. And if he lets Johnny go to UFA then he likely gets a smaller take overall, as much as 3-4 million USD less total NHL career earnings. Unless he can convince Philly or whoever to fork over McDavid level AAV when they still have RFAs to sign.
|
Yup this is why I’m still optimistic. With the latest rumoured offer from the flames being north of 10mil, a 7 year UFA deal likely leaves money on the table already, never mind the next hypothetical contract being lower AAV.
Also I can’t see Gross agreeing to negotiate in bad faith, it would be highly unprofessional and a huge waste of time for all involved.

I don’t think Gross is going to lose the 8th year under any circumstance. I feel like we’re going to hear something soon.

No. But it could handcuff us when his production regresses. I have to specify again I’m not a Johnny hater. I’ve had my ups and downs like many on here. Last year was special. The question is what you believe he is going forward. For that when someone is in a contract year I’m generally skeptical. He’s been about a ppg player and I don’t think that’s worth $11M. And so I think with that as your top line expense it will cost you when he produces in the 85-90 point mark for the next 4-5 years. So if you do want to go to rebuild and want to hand off that contract, it’ll be tough to not pay to get rid of it when he’s a ppg player.

I’m sure this has been said but him leaving is not the worst thing that could happen today. An expensive long term deal is.

What’s an average agent make? 5%? 10%?
He will be pushing his client for the biggest payday, he won’t care where he wants to play. If Gaudreau leaves it’s not about money at all.

That's why you take care of business with your best players as early as possible. Now the team is almost in the exact same scenario with Tkachuk if they don't get him extended this summer.
I don't think there were that many clamoring to trade Gaudreau last summer anyway - more just a vocal minority if you ask me. He finished the year well with Sutter and the top line was rolling. There was little doubt he was still a top level producer.
Maybe not 115 point level, but 90-95 points, why not?

If McDavid or Nate were going to be UFAs tomorrow they would be getting more than 11M
Gaudreau had 115 points...he was better offensively than anyone in the league other than McDavid and even that was close

Exactly. Sunk cost. Fans get heated and it will surely be disappointing if he does walk but I don’t want these ####ty Sutter contracts anymore.

Why? If Guadreau doesn't care about the 8th year, there's nothing anyone can do to make him sign the deal.

If you refuse to go over $9.5 for JG, I understand. But then there was no point keeping him for the last year of his contract.
