All of these things could be true:
  1. Gaudreau loves Calgary and being a Flame
  2. Gaudreau would love to stay
  3. Gaudreau is blown away by Calgary's offer
  4. Gaudreau chooses to leave

So he can't want to stay but also want to try something else? Weird.

Lol or it could be as simple as he wanted to stay and wife wants to be close to home with the baby. For all we know him and his wife are having an all out fight about this.

Well if this team tears everything down if Gaudreau doesn't re-sign, chances that the Flames stay in Calgary are even lower.

Hoping for the best result today regardless of what Gaudreau ends up deciding, but I have to admit I'm more of a glass half-empty kind of guy today.

After watching Tkachuk in the playoffs, I would be hesitant to give him anything over $9mil, even with Gaudreau staying.

They were not cliche answers. Did Tkachuk sat anything the year before last season about a long term deal? No. He went out if his way to say he wanted to stay. I knew you would show up away from the off topic boards around now, time to troll eh buddy? It will you call me a basketcase again because the rules don't seem to apply to you?

Getting some serious psycho ex vibes in here. If it works out great, if he leaves well that’s how it is too. Not sure I’m going to decide to curse his good for nothing name and brand him a coward who’s afraid of being here or whatever madness some are peddling.

Hope it works out and he stays for a decent number. The team let him get to UFA and crucifying him for that is silly.

From JG’s camps point of view it might just be a bonus side effect of taking a long time to decide because Flames did not put an offer in front of him that was good enough to foresake JG’s well earned once in a career FA windfall. Every day that passed after the season ended, JG’s position got stronger.

Flames put themselves here and it was always up to them to pay for the privelege of avoiding a bidding war. This flea market negotiation style the Flames used if true was bush league.

Haha

Just because Johnny said he'd love to stay in Calgary, but then in the end chooses to leave, doesn't mean he was lying the whole time. He probably truly meant it but now that he's forced into an actual decision his deep desire to return home, play for the Flyers and also both he and his wife's families being close by, might make him ultimately choose to leave.

Yeah, they were cliche answers and people have been saying it all year. Again, not his fault you can't seem to grasp that.

Welcome to sports.

And, spoiler, this is basketcase.

Those guys retired with their hockey legacy being they put location first and winning and competing second. See Shane Doan for example. You don't win championships with guys like that. I don't think Johnny is like that though and I believe he was bring totally honest when he said he wants to be here, win here, and wants to stay here. I can't see a guy who seems as competitive as he is throwing his entire hockey legacy down the crapper just to be closer to mom and dad.

I don't think you have to worry about. Not now, not ever.

The current metro area population of Calgary in 2022 is 1,611,000. And it's one of the best hockey markets in the continent. Calgary is one of the wealthiest cities in North America. Only an idiot would move.

Agreed. He fulfilled his part of the bargain. If he leaves - I will immediately shift to the Erick Estrada/Jiri Hirdina theory that paying him $10m/year at age 29 is dumb.

But if people want to be angry with him.. go for it. Do you

If only the flames signed him to 8 years on his last contract and bought out 2 UFA years you'd have no worries.
