Panarin was a year younger than Johhny and signed for one year shorter. It's hardly insulting to offer Johhny in the 80M dollar range - especially factoring in his previous two seasons where he was a 0.85 pts/g player..
If I am Calgary I'd rather sign Gaudreau to a 6 year/11.7M deal than an 8 year/10-10.5M deal.
He was also playing with dead weight the previous two years.
I wasn't saying that the Flames would offer that, I was showing what the AAV would have to be in order for him to make the same total dollars on a 7 year deal vs an 8 year deal if he waits and lets time expire on the possibility of an 8 year deal.
Deangelo is RHD and has always played right-side AFAIK. There are rumours that Ellis may be out a while longer, which is the only way the Deangelo trade begins to make even a little bit of sense.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if they had a deal in place to move JVR for cheap/free, but don't want to pull them trigger unless it's actually necessary (he could have good value at TDL).
Ah, oops. For some reason I thought that dude was a LHD.
Would Gaudreau agree to $11MM per over 7 years and not 8? Would the Flames?
would be great for the Flames (since paying $11m to a 36 year old is not ideal anyway), would be bad for Gaudreau (he could easily get more than $11m if he settles for 7 years). Soooo ... not going to happen, I guess.

According to this he had a pelvic area injury and he re-aggravated it trying to come back. Doesn't sound like a guy expecting to go on LTIRment so they can add his replacement.
Ya, a site called Philly hockey now saying he wants to sign with the Flyers, shocking! This is no more newsworthy than a HF board Flyers fan saying the same thing. Not sure why anyone would thank this post.
I don't know, seemed pretty balanced to me. They didn't even really specifically say philly, according to the source, it said this:
Quote:
The source said Gaudreau, who once starred at Gloucester Catholic High, “wants to play on the East Coast if he can. But, again, he’s not going to close any door he has with (Calgary). We’ll see what happens.”
Anyone who was ascribing a majority chance of Johnny signing here...the evidence has been piling up in your face for a while but that quote should scare you. Yeah, yeah, anonymous source, whatever, hang your hat on that if you want but it's clear johnny wants to play east coast. It's been clear basically from the moment he was drafted by the Flames. And the thing about the east coast is even if philly can't clear cap space there's still like 7 other teams all within a day's drive from his family that could/will. The odds of not one of those teams making a competitive offer to the Flames...is low. All this shuffling will force a rebuild which is what this team needs anyway, and 3-4 years from now we'll have a new exciting young cheap controlled core to cheer for, with a new 8 year window (in which the Flames will hopefully win more than two playoff series) while JG looks worse and worse.

Doesn't scare me at all, that is exactly why media outlets write this crap, to sucker in people. There is nothing to worry about, the deal will get done in Calgary. Eric Francis must be laughing his ass off at all the people that bought his whole made up Johnny wants to go home tripe. I can see why other media runs with it, it gets hits but there is a reason Francis bailed on saying it and swung the other way. He knows damn well he made it up and he knows damn well Gaudreau sincerely wants to stay here.
This may be a dumb question but if it is 50/50 between NJ and Calgary. How important is #13 for him? He won't be getting that number in NJ. I know pro sports players are really particular with their number.
Massive assumption on my part but there are 2 options here.
Go home, get a new number, potentially contend eventually, be closer to family.
Go to Calgary who is in their contending window and cement your legacy and have your number hanging in the rafters after your career is over.
I agree with Jiri, I think its a 50/50 between NJ and Calgary at this point.
It sounds like teams that could potentially have been in the running are slowly dwindling which is obviously a huge plus to the Flames.
Number is a non-issue. Johnny buys* Hischier a watch and they have a media cycle about what a great leader Nico is.
Hischier has previously worn 85 and 18 at times (Johnny's worn other numbers, too).
A little thing I wonder more about is whether Hamilton and Gaudreau get along.

The next 24 hours I think is their window otherwise I can’t see them being able to bring Johnny on without paying an even bigger price than his UFA price tag.
Which sounds great until a GM realizes he's still competing with 30 other GMs for the asset.

Of course Calgary would. If Johnny had agreed to that 6 year deal, it would have been signed already. The whole advantage that Calgary has in persuading him to sign is to offer 2 more years knowing that the last 2 years he'd be overpaid.
We may never know for sure, but if us losing Johnny comes down to Murray's failure to adjust to the economic realities of the league or to his way of negotiating (like a baby), then this will be a tough pill.
Up until now he's been a cap spending owner and my perception is it is the GM's job to allocate. If this isn't true, god help us all.
Murray got us Sutter, I am sure he is going to spend to the cap. GM decides allocation. I would be shocked if the Flames do not spend to the cap.

It is kind of interesting to note that since COVID no player has signed a contract for more than $10M AAV.
Barkov at 8x$10M is the highest AAV deal signed since the start of COVID. Lots of players have signed for $9.5M which is my guess on why the Flames started there.
Gaudreau will break that threshold for sure...but I do wonder what offers there will be for him on the open market and I don't really see anything above $11M.

I also think that that report out of Philadelphia is pretty balanced but unlike DiracSpike, I don't come to the same conclusions from it about what Gaudreau wants, and what will happen. I have no doubt that he would he thrilled at the chance to play close to home, but like that blurb says, it would have to make sense—more sense than it would to stay in Calgary. At the heart of it, that is what this negotiation is about, and I continue to believe that Gaudreau will conclude that the best decision will be for him to stay in Calgary.

I wear 99, and this is the reason I stick to beer league division 7, as the NHL was off the table.

You have Friedman saying as of today that the Flames offer is 9.5x8 and that their not crazy about going higher than that. Then you have Seravelli saying the flames are willing to go 11x8 but Johnny wouldn’t likely accept that. Add in all the CP rumours and JG’s family members liking tweets that are about JG staying and it’s becoming a mixed bag with no ability to really know where the negotiations are truly at.
Well, I heard that Johnny has actually retired from hockey and is in the Himalayans training to be a Ninja with the Arashikage clan.

I kind of agree with your assessment of the market. If he really is holding out for $11MM per, Flames are getting zero discount on that 8th year IMO.
Thing is, the guy is basically UFA at this point. So just like with Neal and others, Flames need to win the auction to sign him and the price may well be that 8th year.
