Sure... they'd have to trim all the fat off the roster thou. Lucic traded, Monahan buyout, bottom.-pairing walking with cheap internal replacements only.

The Bennett trade, how we lost Giordano in the expansion draft, Gaudreau about to leave, and Tkachuk likely looking for a trade or being forced to stick around another year before he’s allowed to be free. One bad situation after another. A poster on here is saying that ownership is negotiating directly with Gaudreau? How does Treliving still have a job?

Do we need a Wall of Shame for this thread?

He'll get the NMC that's a given... my only hope is that it's heavily front loaded and the last two years are salary years and not mostly bonus money.

Hoping Gaudreau's camp settles under 11.
11 is a bit rich for a team up against it with important players to sign (considering Tkachuk will rightfully use his contract as a comparison). I hope gaudreau remains cognizant of the situation and needing to keep the whole band together to have a shot at this.

If Tkachuk is not wanting to continue being here, if Johnny doesn’t re-sign, the writing is on the wall for a retool/re-build IMO.
If we end up losing our two top players over the next few months, we just won’t be a contender.
I hope the next 24 to 48 hours lead to both of them getting contracts with the Flames though.

If Johnny walks, and Matthew is traded, I wonder if the Flames can “weaponize” the cap space to do a very quick reset. The 2023 draft is deeper, so the ability to take on cap space in return for draft picks and prospects might be a silver lining
Would prefer to keep both Johnny and Matthew and add to the team, but starting to look at the positives of the negative situation

We will weaponize that cap space straight into Phil Kessel at $7MM AAV.

So based off DiontheDman the Flames have offered $80 million and Gross is asking for $92 million.
Flames may have to cave and give $88 million total IMO
That's a $12.5m AAV on a 7 year deal.

Johnny is far more valuable to the franchise especially when the range is within 1.5-2.0 million (if the rumours are correct). Just get it done.

A lot of us still remember how things ended with our former stars Gilmour and MacInnes. How does 1.5-2.0 compare to the differences then?
A hard stop is exactly Murray’s MO.

Yes; same thing if I remember correctly with Nieuwendyk and Fleury. Flames could only afford to sign one and we know who was chosen (understood that a bad back had something to do with it as well.

He'd get 12.5 x 7 on the open market. Why would he sign that with us? Why would we even offer that when 8 years is the only leverage we've got?

I had always thought 10.5 was probably about right, but would cause some pain to the Flames as I don't know how they sign him and Tkachuk and field a competitive roster. Now looking through CapFriendly, I worry that the comp might be Panarin at 11.6. That would be really tough.

Believe Cap will go way up next year won't it after the players have 'paid back' whatever they owed the owners? Just have to claw through this year.

If it’s north of $11MM AAV, it has been a pleasure to have Johnny as a Flame and wish him well with his future team.

IMO this is all media trying to get more clicks. Negative, anxiety inducing news (IE Johnny might not sign! the two sides aren't close! Your team is falling apart!) Just drives more interest than ordinary news (Johnny probably will re-sign, two sides having cordial negotiations, your team will probably look similar next season, etc)... And boy does it work.

I wasn't saying that the Flames would offer that, I was showing what the AAV would have to be in order for him to make the same total dollars on a 7 year deal vs an 8 year deal if he waits and lets time expire on the possibility of an 8 year deal.

Curious, if that (first) info was actually true (not saying it is), how should they be presenting it?
