I'm very surprised they didn't trade down for more picks at least

Button on 960 said the Flames were looking more at opportunities to trade down than trading up, but Brad said the phone wasn't ringing.

Shocking…..considering the premium picks he was holding

I think that the Parker Bell pick is underrated. The guy I was cheering to get went the pick after to the Hurricanes. Grudinin is going to be really good, considering his primary weakness was not having enough muscle on his frame, with all the skills above average. Not surprised at the team that picked him though.

Best drafting teams Carolina and Columbus, pretty consistently.

Wonder if Flames only advantage of low # of 2022 draft picks is offering up more tryout opportunities for undrafted lads:

What has Carolina drafted since 2017? Svechnikov second overall? Necas 12th overall? They do OK finding NHLers in the first round, but after that?

Wadell took over in 2018, and I am not a fan of his. His scouting staff was revamped for the 2020 draft (I think) and they are taking really good value players in the later rounds lately.

2020 - Seely, Pashin, Nybeck, Ponomarev and Gunler all 2nd or later
2021 - Orr, Heimosalmi, Morrow all 2nd or later (granted not as strong)
2022 - Grudinin, Lucius, Forsmark, Perevalov and Trikozov all 2nd or later

Just a lot of really big swings. I really like their entire draft this year. Sure there is a chance that nothing turns out for them, but there is nothing safe about their drafting style. Should start seeing the 2020 guys this year in the NHL, but IMO that is a prospect pool with a future.

Wonder why the Flames didn't pick a Styf like Helmer.

Well the new management's only been in place since 2018. Seth Jarvis is looking amazing in the NHL at 20. Morrow looks like a future stud. Kochetkov looks solid, Koivunen, etc. They've drafted 2 elite forwards and a potential top 4 d in 4 years. The better question who has been better at drafting during this period than the Canes with the picks available to them.
