I really liked D Tomas Hamara in the U-18s. He was tied with Hutson for 2nd overall in D scoring for the tournament, with 8 points in 6 games. He's reliable defensively, with solid positioning and good gap control, but has good skill with the puck, and is a great playmaker. 6'0", 185lbs, and a good skater. Known for being calm under pressure. 25 pts in 32 games in the Finnish U20 league, which ties him for 11th in D scoring, 4th for defensemen 18 and under.

I did a little write-up about D Filip Nordberg in the Draft thread, and I think he's the type of player our management might like. He's huge (6'4",207lbs), but his speed, mobility, and physicality are all considered his top assets. He's good on both sides of the puck, putting up 27 points in 42 J20 games-good for 11th in D scoring, and his 88 PIM were 2nd in the league. He employs a strong defensive game, with good gap control and positioning. His weakness is that he needs to learn to simplify things, as he can turn over the puck trying to do too much, or look to make the big hit, etc.

D Simon Forsmark ripped apart the J20 league this year, with 27 pts in 23 games (0.52 primary points per game average), and 7 pts in 5 playoff games. He played a remarkable 41 games in the SHL as well, scoring 3 points. He was named J20 Best Defenseman-a feat accomplished previously by Hampus Lindholm, Tomas Bjornfot, and Nils Lundkvist. He has everything you want-size (6'2"), defensive acumen, elite IQ and awareness, good stick, quality first-pass, he just lacks in the skating department. If he improves in that area, you easily have a top-4 NHLer.

Whoever gets picked with the Flames picks today will be the steals of the draft and all the other picks will be busts. Sorry, I don’t make the rules

And they will be exactly the players that we wanted.

That’s a bit cynical. Good luck to all the young players today and especially the flames.

What’s wrong with his skating, Sandman?

It’s average at best in all categories. He is considered a standout defensively, and is able to defend with his smarts and keen reaction time, but he can get burned, particularly in the men’s league, by faster opponents. He looks to have good balance, but everything else needs work-first step, agility, east/west, top speed, etc.

Forsmark is really good on both sides of the puck.
His foot speed I feel is a little bit overblown, he's no Makar but he routinely seemed fine when being backed in by puck moving forwards.

He's not Zadorov slow, and I think a skating coach would do wonders.
What you cant ignore is his offensive upside which is not at a cost of his defensive game. He's really good in my opinion, if Hutson is gone and he's available I wouldn't be mad if they took him.

Not sure how many folks here watch in the States, but holy smokes I thought the ESPN coverage was awful. This might be the one time where I miss NBC covering the draft as I think they just used the TSN feed. The combo of Weeks, Brian Boucher, John Buccigross and Meghan Chayka just feels like amateur hour. I also find Buccigross super cringy, and just an overall creep. I give Chayka credit for hanging in there because with Bucci hosting it always feels like the old boys club. Emily Kaplan has a super awkward interview style as well.

Most people don’t care about hockey in the US. Some don’t even know the draft exist.

Not having TSN do draft coverage sucks. It's just set a bar too high I think. Roger's sucks.

After the Rogers TV deal, NBC would just hire all the TSN analysts for draft weekend because TSN couldn't cover the draft live anymore.

It was why they were still high quality.

To put Simon Forsmark's 27pts in 23 games in the J20 into perspective, here's a few players in their draft year:

Nils Lundkvist: 14 pts in 26 games
Simon Edvinsson: 6 pts in 14 games
Hampus Lindholm: 17 pts in 28 games
Tobias Bjornfot: 22 pts in 39 games
Adam Boqvist: 24 pts in 25 games
Timothy Liljegren: 7 pts in 12 games

Hoping we can nab one of Hutson, Trikozov, Perevalov, or Firkus.

Byron Bader has these guys as the having the highest star probability left in the draft. Swing big!
