I'd say the chances are the same he retires in 7 as they are in 8. So he's still giving up money. I don't think whoever was going to give him $5M at 35 is going to say "you're 36, that's off the table" all else being equal.

Yeah, say he is actually torn about going back home and he is confident the Devils will give him 11.5x7 then it is a little better than 10x8 and he gets to be home. He'll be so rich that maybe the 7 year contract would be more attractive.

How slim? Like Ray Whitney slim? Martin St. Louis slim? How slim do you think the chances are?

Sign it, Brad. The alternative is normal middle-of-standings-squalor for who knows how long or a full rebuild.

Worst case scenario you can trade him in 3 or 4 years if it's not working and the window has passed.

Sure, but Letang just signed a deal for 6.1M.

He's going to play that 8th year, more than likely, and he's going to get paid to do it.

So 11.5/7 + whatever year 1 of the next contract is = more than 10/8.

The benefit of the 8th year is more guaranteed money. But if someone is offering you the same guaranteed money over a shorter timeframe, that's the better deal.

Then it doesn’t matter what Calgary offered he was going home. Good luck and thanks for your service, you’re the enemy now.

If this rumour of Johnny sending counter offer is true , I expect this to be finalized within 24 hours. Flames should counter at 10.5 million. From there it shouldn’t take more than a coup like of hours on final dollar amount. That’s if this is true.

The same, sure. Less with a chance for more, except you could also make more after 8 years as well, not so much.

No! I love Johnny and don’t want him to leave but at this point I’ve resided to the fact I PERSONALLY believe he is going home and he will only stay in Calgary for a stupid over payment and I don’t want my team to do that. Regardless of how good he is…

Well Cammaleri does not even belong with those other three. Bure and Kariya basically left the game because of injuries (Bure had knee and neck problems and Kariya had concussion issues). And Savard basically played in an era when nobody really played past 35. People were shocked that someone as old as Lanny could still be on a Cup winning team at 35.

I will concede that if Johnny gets career ending injuries like Bure and Kariya he will likely not be a significant contributor past the age of 35.

Anyone who says let him leave if it's $11mil/per hasn't watched the Flames the past 4 years play.

and look at sec214 trying to save face... lol

I just don’t want this to be the same team that got eliminated by the oilers. We have to be better, and I don’t think Toffoli and Coleman are the pieces we needed.

I’m okay keeping johnny, but if we lose chucky for some better parts, cool.

I also don't get the Treliving hate. Is the guy supposed to see the future? He did what any GM would have done, and anyone on here claiming they had a better idea is full of bull. We get it, you're smarter than everyone else on the planet and are infallible. Neat.

Finally, I'm still pretty confident Johnny signs here. 8 years, chance to be the best player ever in the franchise, he and the family seem to like Calgary, friends on the team....pretty strong reasons to stay. I'm sure this will drag out to try to scrape more $$ out of the Flames, but once the clock runs out, my bet is on Johnny staying put.

Treliving has zero hand here. Except for: "I won't pay you 12 mil per."

Call me crazy, but I'm fine paying an extra $1M over "fair" to our franchise player in his prime (not to mention someone well on their way to becoming one of the best Flames' forwards in history).

Seems better than the alternative of... nothing.

As far as bad contracts go the Flames are looking pretty great. Lucic and Monahan are both short-term. And who knows, maybe Monahan's issues were just injuries and he may rebound into a solid middle six player.
