I like mooch but $5+ million cap hit for a 4th liner is way to much.

So we’re going to just believe any random paste-eater that posts a rumour about Lucic in here?

Did he specify game 1 of regular or post season? Never know when a team might be Kane/Kucherov-ing the LTIR now lol.

He'd also have personal experiences that might influence his thinking - a certain Devil had a standout game against the Flames or a certain Flyer stunk it up.
I suspect they think a lot more about coaching/mgmt/ownership than we do as fans.
Or maybe he doesn't think about it too much and just has a very general sense that Calgary = slightly better short-term vs. most other teams who look slightly better long-term.

I think we forget that hockey players generally are not as educated as a lot of fans, including about the league. They are also so close to the action they can miss the forest for the trees. I think that, absent some sort of outside info like you mention, they think “that team has a bunch of great players”. And they probably tend to think more highly of established players than good prospects. I doubt they follow minors and college hockey much, except their former teams.

A lot of it is players talking to guys they know on other teams, and their agent talking to other agents. Hockey's an incredibly small world.

If we move Lucic, we'll have 12M for Mangi, 3 4th liners, 2 bottom pairing D and a couple of spares. We could even afford a partridge in a pear tree.

I think you’re looking at a short 22 man roster with 6F and 3D?
But if you spend 20M for the duo and a little bit over 2M for the three spares, you have 5M to spend on 2 fourth liners, 2 bottom pairing defenseman and Mangipaine which is impossible to fit. Move Lucic and it’s still tight even if you fill the roster with six geese a laying.

If the flames offer is still what Friedman has reported then we are going to be seeing Johnny hit free agency, as this will essentially mean that no counter offer has even been made by either Johnny or the flames past the first.
My pessimism has increased.

I think you're missing Kylington. His AAV is tough to pin down depending on the term, and he's arb eligible.

There’s still time.
Little to no doubt that Gaudreau is weighing his options, as he should. As for the Flames if the offer was what, or close to, was rumoured 3-4 weeks ago then all they should be doing is maintaining contact.
It’s Gaudreau’s decision and from the sounds of it the Flames have left the door open on negotiations and continue to maintain contact. They may have indicated a timeline they would like to have some decision or idea on which way this was going to go, but if they decide to move the goalposts, one way or the other, I doubt it would serve the Flames well.
They’ve made their pitch. Pressuring Gaudreau would almost certainly backfire. We’re still in the wait and see window. Come the draft, that may change.

Landeskog tried to squeeze more out of the Avs and waited to the last minute to sign. Stamkos went and had free agent meetings turning down big $ to stay in Tampa. I remember Erik Karlsson seemed like he was certainly heading to free agency until the Shakes put 11.5x8 in front of him.
Ultimately it feels like the Flames will have to do the same for Johnny. They need to increase the offer to likely that $11M range in the last day of free agency and just make the money too big for Johnny to turn down. In addition to the money he has the legacy piece here.
I still think Johnny signs for 8 years but I really hope he decides before the draft and not the 13th

Remember that the Landeskog situation involved the ED, and probably more importantly was COL trying to fix their goaltending.
I'm sure Gabe and COL were talking throughout, but not much could happen until COL knew that they were losing Donskoi's 3.9M and that Grubauer was pricing himself out of town...they made the Kuemper trade on UFA day so it must have been nearly done when they inked Landeskog.

I think a large signing bonus carries the day. And the Flames don’t like signing bonuses do they?

They will if it means locking their franchise player down.
