If Johnny signs, then Calgary goes forward with the belief that they are a contender. If Johnny moves on, I'm afraid that Tre will sign Tkachuk and Mangiapane to big contracts to compensate, and those guys are premiere players, but can't put a team on his back the way that Johnny can.
If he goes, I'm almost at the point where I want all three to go, and rebuild on the fly. I don't want a mediocre team.

Literally almost anywhere would be closer to home for him. I don't think "playing closer to home" necessarily means being close enough to drive to see family on the weekends. It could just mean being able to take a quick flight or getting to play on the road close to home 20+ times per year.
That's why I wouldn't rule out places like Detroit, Nashville, or even Buffalo as being places he might consider. Detroit in particular has cap space to burn and some of the best young talent in the league. They might not be good now, but they will get there soon.

Going off topic but Johnny hasn't proven, in the playoffs at least, that he can carry the team on his back. He was great at times but not dominating by any stretch of the imagination.
This team still needs big steps from all of the big guns and next ones in order to make that elusive next step come playoff time.

And against the Oilers that should not be as difficult as against teams with shutdown D or defensive system.
It was hard not to knock him down a grade based on that series.
The only thing that should stop a guy like Johnny from terrorizing the Oilers in their end is when their two stars have the puck on their stick, which is only some of the time.
I still don't even know what I watched there.

Not to re-hash it, but players that are injured should be identified as such and their position on the team altered to reflect that. Tkachuk should have been playing the third line and Toffoli moved up, once it was clear that Tkachuk had a major issue with his hand. I'm sure that effected the whole line.

CBJ may be closer to winning than NJD - they managed 18 more pts than NJD despite Laine and Werenski missing a fair bit of time (though so did Hughes and Hamilton) and have never really bottomed out the way
Hughes/Hischier are more certain and further along than Sillinger/Johnson, but the rest of CBJ roster is in better shape:
Elvis locked up for 5 yrs vs. Blackwood or ???
Werenski > Hamilton
Gavrikov vs. Severson - both 1 yr from UFA
Boqvist/Bean vs. Luke Hughes/Ty Smith - probably give the edge to NJD, but all of these guys are big question marks.
Laine/Bjorkstrand/Jenner/Roslovic/Chinakhov/Texier/Bemstrom/etc
vs.
Bratt/Zacha?/Mercer/Sharangovich/Holtz/Boqvist/Foote/etc
CBJ has a better G and #1D. NJD probably has better 1-2C (of the future). The next 10 best players on each roster are a bit of a toss up - CBJ is more ready to compete now but maybe a lower ceiling for their youngest guys. NJD picks 2OA, CBJ picks 6 and 12.

It's actually July 13th. I made the same mistake when I said he's got a month, it's two weeks.

He had one less point than Kucherov and Tkachuk had more than Stamkos at the time they were eliminated
Top line scoring isn't why the Flames went out in round two. Goaltending, defence, and depth didn't show up like we hoped

They will most certainly be swinging for the fences and trying to get either Forsberg or Kadri IMO.
Now, let's say they do sign a guy like Forsberg for example. They will still be able to sign Johnny if they circle back to each other. It would just mean that they would have to trade Tkachuk for some sort of future laden package. Maybe even Mangiapane too, depending on what happens with Monahan and Lucic. Obviously I'm a big fan of Tkachuk, but that wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen either IMO.
Bring in Forsberg as a Tkachuk replacement, bring Johnny back, and then get some sort of nice haul for Tkachuk.
However, I still maintain that if Gaudreau hits the market, he's gone.

what haul could you legitimately receive for 1 year of a 9M Tkachuk who is then a UFA?

that's pretty generic. you can say that about most good players.
Some people think Tkachuk will get a great return on a trade, so I'd love to hear what they think he's worth.
I don't think anyone would pay a high first + a top 6 player and a prospect for 1 year of a 9M Tkachuk, for example.

Starting to feel like us Fans are going to eat the big old Sh*t sandwich on this one.
Just another American that doesn't want to play in Canada. So awesome that Canadian players hardly ever want to play back home :/

MT is an interesting use case.
When was the last time a 25 year old who has 104 pts on the open market and potentially hitting free agency.
It doesn't happen.
But MT is also an interesting player. Can he drive his own top line and be a 100 pt player? Can he be signed?
If a team believes the answer is yes to both the haul would be close to Eichel I would expect.

Yup.
Unless a deal is worked out beforehand, then no GM is mortgaging a big part of his teams future for a guy who can play out the season and walk....or just wait a season and get him without giving up any assets.
Tkachuk is more valuable to Calgary than any other team else right now.
I still think he is a priority to be signed long term THIS summer. Also believe he will be the captain of this club in the next couple years.

It's not an ideal scenario because teams know they only get him for one year unless they have an inside angle on signing a long term extension. Maybe something like one year of Tarasenko and the Blues 1st round pick is the best you can get. I feel if Gaudreau walks that the Flames will focus on signing Tkachuk to an 8 year contract as that's probably the best outcome for the Flames.

Its pretty clear he is an offensive line driver. No he likely is not 100 pt guy regularly, but closer to a ppg guy as evidenced by his totals when playing with Backlund primarily the first few years.

Columbus has never secured a top free agent. Ohio is the Winnipeg of the US they are not a desirable market. Laine likely wants out and they haven’t been able to keep any key free agents in the past.
You are blowing pure smoke if you think that Columbus is a real threat for Johnny

Weird how people talk like he has already accepted his QO and that is how it will be. Trade Tkachuk to a team that he will want to sign for 8 years and this silly “1 year to UFA” talk can die. It is not like he has a 1 year deal secured he is free to sign a 1-8 year contract with a team
