I like the fact he has warned them in advance. They can now trade him with at least two years of control to offer.
Of course, his motivation in telling the Jets is to encourage a trade.
But hard to complain about a player wanting to exercise his right to live where he wants when given basically a 1 time ability to choose.

Random idea: NJD and PHI could be good partners for a shake it up trade:
2OA + Blackwood + Siegenthaler
for
5OA + Hart + Provorov
Both goalies could use a change of scenery. NJD needs D more than F's, and they'd likely get Jiricec or Nemec at 5 - both sound like great long-term partners for Hughes. NJD's biggest immediate need is a young 2-way LHD workhorse, and Provorov fits that bill pretty well.
PHI gets a blue-chip forward, opens up some cap room, and Blackwood is probably a slight upgrade at G.

I’m trying to figure out the fallout from PLD saying he’s going UFA in 2024. Seems like he’s trying to set up some sort of sign and trade? Because certainly no one will just trade for him knowing he’s a 2 year rental with no commitment to a team. And he’s not going to be treated well in his RFA contract by the Jets if they have no stake any more.

If he's traded to the right team I am sure he will have no problem signing an extension early. IMO this is just him saying he will not be staying in WPG past this contract, in hopes that they will trade him this summer to a destination he may find more desirable.

So why not just ask for a trade instead of saying “I’m going UFA in 2 years”. And he never even said “but if I wind up on the right team I’d sign a long term extension”. He only said “UFA”. That seems oddly specific.

Probably because he doesn't want to be perceived as one of those guys that overplays the "trade me" card. I would be hesitant about committing long term to a player that's requested to be traded numerous times as he may come off as a malcontent or guy that can't handle adversity. It's fair to the Jets in that they won't be wasting any time incorporating him in their future plans.

Maybe he did ask for a trade and Chevy wasn't having none of it? So then he and his agent go public basically saying they won't be re-signing in WPG when the time comes to put pressure on Chevy to trade him now while he isn't a rental?
I really don't know. Just speculating.

Maybe but “I’m definitely going UFA in 2 years no matter how this team does or what you give me in RFA” is not much of a better card. Maybe even worse because it almost tells other teams not to bother as well.
Maybe he’s hoping for an offer sheet?

Why? Teams trade for rentals all the time

Yeah, but you get less for a rental. And this would be a two year rental for a guy who you have to arbitrate with.

Kind of a ###### move from Dubois who must be getting a good rep in NHL circles as a malcontent, regardless of market. Also why not hang tight, see who the Jets bring in as head coach. Trotz helps cement you as a top team. Chill guy.

Perhaps he’s not happy being in Winnipeg? Laine certainly wasn’t. At the end of the day, this is his life. He can do as he pleases. Better to be upfront than deceptive. Dude is letting it be known he won’t be signing there again - so the team can act accordingly.
Perhaps Winnipeg’s dressing room is a disaster?
Paul Maurice bailed on the team as well. Byfuglien walked away. There’s a good number of oddities around that Winnipeg team.

The language is odd though. He's saying he won't sign long term anywhere. He's an RFA with two years left, both with arb rights. Last time out he also only signed 2 years (with Columbus). He seems bent on signing for as short term as possible, to get to UFA as soon as possible. I suspect he figures he's worth a lot as a 3OA. He's watched other players from behind him in that draft - Tkachuk, Keller, McAvoy - get more than him and he wants to catch up.

He's obviously unhappy, but the team is also on the cusp pf making some pretty dramatic changes that could impact the room positively. Instead he says he wants to leave - 2 years out. Thats a long time and to me, comes across as immature. You want a trade? Your agent can quietly let it be known you'd like to move this year. Its quiet and maybe they can make a better deal at the draft etc. But for a guy who visibly quit on his team in the last city he played in? Bad look.

I’m originally from Winnipeg but have lived in Calgary for 20 years. I’m in Winnipeg right now finishing my daughter’s basement. The city of my youth is now a dump. If you venture out of the south end you’d think you were in a third world country. I can see why players wouldn’t want to play here. Everything is falling apart. Pretty sad. If it wasn’t for my kids I’d never go back.

He's telling the jets he's not signing with them.
I didn't take that to mean all teams.
