To make their team better…
Bratt is one of like 5-6 very promising young forwards on NJD (not including Hughes or Hischier). If NJD think they can level up with a Gaudreau or Forsberg, then they can bet on their other young guys to fill complimentary roles and turn Bratt into a good young D or G.

5) Fill out the rest of the roster with near league min players
It would be awesome though.

I agree it's unlikely but if you're returning with the same group or slightly worse its tough to see how they improve. If they are stuck on going for it and not rebuilding its the type of thing that needs to happen to give yourself a half decent chance. Even if you have a Kadri, Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Lindholm, you still likely don't beat Colorado but at least it's more likely.

You think Kadri would be a good UFA target?
|
No, I don't. But unlike some posters in this thread, I know that the Flames don't go after UFAs just because they are bad targets.

I think a great UFA target if the flames find a way to free up dollars is Trochek.
Speed to burn, plays a two way game, puts up points. I think he's a great #2.
Does he get much more than 6AAV? Monahan money out, Trochek money in somehow?

Problem is we have to move Monahan’s money just for his whole cap hit to go towards Gaudreau and Tkachuk’s deals.
I personally would like to see a vet come in and provide some veteran experience and has some offensive flair to his game. Would love Giroux or Pavs but they might cost more than I think.

I dont see the Flames moving Monny despite the last two years of health issues and the need for cap.
For a couple of reasons. Obviously the first reason is that a lot of money to move for a risky investment.
Secondly, I think the Flames organization on the whole have gained some real loyalty to him. After Trees presser announcing that Monny was out for the rest of the season I just felt that they really don't want to lose him.
All that despite the trade rumors.

The motivation could be to get something for a guy who has been a difficult signing in the past and is proving to be the same currently.

Was reading an article in the Athletic today about Nichuskin and how hip surgery basically cost him 2 seasons before Dallas walked away from him. Now he is fully rehabbed and he's a beast. One comment was that after rehabbing from hip surgery the next thing you need to do is learn to play hockey again as all the mechanics are completely new.
Instantly thought of Monahan and I wonder if there isn't a rennaisance in his future. Certainly hope so.

If you just bought them shirts, they’re probably as good as gone.

Nichushkin has really come around in his career-he's become a fantastic two-way player, even getting Selke votes the last few years. 52 points in 62 games, plus 13 points in 16 playoff games. 6'4", 210lbs-Sutter would love him, and boy would he look great on a line with Backlund.....

Are you saying Bratt but using Mangiapane's back story?

Goodness. Suddenly so active after months of silence during the Flames's successful season and first round playoff victory.

We sign Trochek for $6M and convince someone to take Monny for nothing.
Or that team could simply sign Trochek.

Lol, well I certainly didn't say we would be unloading Monahan for free.
But even ignoring that assumption on your part... If Calgary found a new home for Monahan, it would likely not be a place that would be in the running for upper crust FAs.
Calgary has a good team that good players are going to want to play on. Hopefully something we all have to get used to.
