Neal's career year occurred six years before the Flames signed him. He was signed from Vegas, which at that time was not a superstar-laden team, but (as many people called it) the Island of Misfit Toys.

Brouwer's career year was two years before the Flames signed him. He was signed from St. Louis, which was not a superstar-laden team either.

You're batting 0 for 2 so far. Do you have any actual examples?

Brouwer is a pretty good example. His playoff run leading up to UFA really blew up his value. His regular season production would never have justified contract.

You’re right on Neal. He had already started to decline, Flames just missed it.

8-5-13 in 20 gp on a team that did not make the finals? I suppose that might have ‘blown up’ his value all the way from $3,666,667 on his old contract to $4,500,000 on his new one. Or it could have been that he went to market as a UFA for the first time, whereas on his previous contract he re-signed with the Capitals.

Neal was never the player that his career season would make him appear to someone who only read the stat lines. He got 40 goals and 81 points playing in a top-six role in Pittsburgh, which meant he was getting quality ice time with either Crosby or Malkin. If he had been a genuine 80-point player, he'd have signed for a hell of a lot more than $5,750,000.

As it was, he was the only decent goal-scoring RW to hit UFA status in a year when the Flames and several other teams needed one desperately. He cashed in on a bidding war. It happens. But he certainly didn't cash in on a career year that was six years in the past.

I'm still waiting for an example of a UFA the Flames overpaid after a career year.

Seems like kind of pointless thing to argue. Neal or Brouwer were bad UFA signings and if there was a bidding war for their services, Flames should not have made it a point to outbid everyone else.

You think Kadri would be a good UFA target?

Kadri would be a horrible target, especially in place of Gaudreau.

I think Kadri would be the perfect FA for this team, especially if Tre could find a way to move salaries (ie Monahan and Lucic), and still sign Johnny. If JG were to leave, there’s no way we’re replacing his points with one player anyhow. We could use another C who can provide offence either way, and Kadri tore it up this year.

Didn’t Kadri block a trade to the flames with Brodie? Can’t see him signing to play here as a FA

I think Kadri has said that it was nothing to do with the Flames and that he doesn't view the Flames negatively, but he was focused on trying to find a way to stay in Toronto at that time.

Add a Kadri or Forsberg while keeping Gaudreau and Tkachuk now you're talking. If one is just a replacement though the team isn't strong enough to be a contender.

I don't see any way they could possibly do this.

They have to:

1) Miraculously move Monahan without retaining any
2) Miraculously remove Lucic
3) Trade Mangiapane
4) Trade Kylington
5) Fill out the rest of the roster with near league min players

It would be awesome though.

So that would put Bratt in exactly the same position as Mangiapane, Kylington and Tkachuk.

So right now Gaudreau is looking at playing on a line with Lindholm and Toffoli should he stay with the Flames. Or maybe Backlund and Coleman.

maybe rather than trade Mangiapane they could trade the top-6 replacement player (4.25 x 2) they acquired back to Montreal for a 1st a 5th and a prospect.

Of course he could be 100% lying.

Money talks. He’s going to sign with the team that offers him the most money whether it be the Flames, Seattle, or whatever.

This is a good point, we need to try to find a way to keep these players and add quality players.

Yep.

Team needs to find a way to improve, not just maintain.

Except Bratt"s agent confirms they HAVE made an offer and talks are ongoing. There is no way NJD trades Bratt.

Could be. Feel free to make your own assessment based on what he said.
