It was abundantly clear that Sutter had zero faith in Kylington without Tanev propping him up and you want to put our smallest D in the #1 position?
|
Well if Sutter did indeed entrust Hanifin with the hardest matchups, then that blew up in his face because I think Leon Draisaitl broke an Oiler record for most points in a single series beating the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and etc.
In terms of Andersson, the conversation could be had to move him as well. I think he brings more to the table than Hanifin, he's a right shot which is hard to find and I like him more as the PP QB. But together, that pairing was an absolute mess. They were on the ice for 16 and 18 goals against respectively, that's more than Z and G who each had 9 and Kylington at 6, Tanev at 3 and Stone at 2.
Lastly, I don't have Kylington slotted at #1. I think he's fine just where he is with Chris Tanev. If you look at the numbers, even in the regular season, Kylington played a lot of minutes and in tough situations and he did well defensively. Obviously he had Tanev with him, but I think he gets overlooked. I think the Flames can get him on a good, cheap, long term deal here.

So now you want to get rid of our entire top pairing of 25 year old defenders because they couldn't handle McDavid and #### goaltending?
Like I understand there's 0% chance that would ever happen but I can't even wrap my head around how you would think that would be a good idea.

25/26 year old D like Hanifin and Andersson are only going to be better after this, and odds are they’re going to be playing a very high level for the next 7-10 years or more.
Trade them if you blow it up. But don’t spend assets trying to upgrade them - let them get better.

Well I would keep Andersson, but due to cap constraints, I would strongly consider trading Hanifin. This isn't just a, "I didn't like Hanifin in the playoffs, trade him now" kind of thing.
It's more like, this team has serious cap issues and there will be cap casualties. I had him on my list of bubble guys even before the playoffs started and his poor playoff performance just makes it an easier decision IMO.
I've said this seemingly 100 times, but I'd implore everyone to look at the team's cap situation and realize how difficult it will be to bring back the same line up. Tough decisions will have to be made and good players will have to go and Hanifin is a good player that I think may have to go.

We don’t want to bring back the same lineup. We want to bring back the same core that’s finished top-2 in the conference two of the last four years.
Get them another superstar.

Who replaces him that is cheaper? If anyone is a cap casualty it is Gaudreau or Tkachuk.
Maybe Lucic will do us a favor and retire

I mean maybe, but I wasn't too impressed with him against Colorado or the 2020 Dallas series. Like, sure, he's still young, but I just don't know how much better he can improve in that area. It's either you have it or you don't and I don't know if he can reinvent his game.
Another thing is, I give Darryl a lot of credit in that I think his system allows defensemen to really thrive. Gudbranson was thought to be done, but here he is with a career year under his belt at the age of 30. Ditto for Zadorov, Kylington couldn't even crack the roster previously. So I think if Hanifin did go, I don't think it'd be an impossible task to find a decent replacement at a fraction of his cost.

I am in US this week and was watching Game 5 on local broadcast with Brian Boucher and Cris Chelios. FWIW, they all agreed that Gaudreau is as good as gone and will sign with Philadelphia in July. There was not even a “maybe” in the discussion for Johnny to stay in Calgary.

With what money?
This team is capped out. They can't even afford all the stars they have now. This was the year. It's why Treliving went all in. Even he knew this was the best shot he'd likely have with this core.

Who do you even play at LD without Hanifin? If we can't afford $4.9M for top-pairing minutes, we may as well rebuild. If you want to argue we should upgrade the #1LD spot, I can see that argument. But if we're dumping Hanifin for cap reasons, we're setting ourselves up for failure. You really can't go much cheaper than a $9M top D pairing.

They’re just giving their opinions. Nobody has any concrete evidence to prove that Johnny wants to leave. At this point, everything is speculation until it all unfolds

Who could blame him?
It’d probably be easier playing one opponent at a time than 2 (other team and stripes). Might as well figure out who the league likes and just go there.
It will be impossible for Tre to put together a roster as deep as this one with all of the raises due
We know that a bunch of the sun teams (LA, SJ, Tampa) all have gotten to circumvent the cap one way or another.
Lots of options for him with less headwind than here

Well that just sucks balls.
This was definitely the all-in year.

They aren't Johnny though. It's all up to him whether he wants to stay or not.

Johnny is as good as gone. It’s fine tho. Someone else can pay him crazy money, glad it won’t be the flames. We got his best years for cheap, saw the ceiling of the team with him as the best player, it’s all good. Let’s both move on. Guy clearly always wanted to be east coast.

The core is Johnny, Tkachuk, Lindholm, Hanifin, Andersson and Markstrom.
Everyone else is a spare part who can be replaced and should not be committed to with significant term or dollars.
Buy out Monahan, save $4.25Mish.
Trade Mangiapane and Kylington (Heretofore referred to by me as Bread and Circus) for a superstar.
Plan to have Zary, Pelletier and Coronato on the team next year - if Coronato doesn’t sign this summer, include him in the superstar trade.
All hinging of course on 13 and 19 extending, but if they do, we’re in a place where we shouldn’t be drafting our own picks for at least the next 3-5 years.
Not saying it’s easy, but you can do a lot to retool this roster of you don’t overcommit to the wrong guys.

I’d love to keep Johnny. I hope he wants to stay.
Tkachuk is a pretty great regular season guy when he’s on. I’d look to sign him and move him for futures/hockey deal
Extend Mangiapane if the money makes sense. Extend OK.
Bring up Pelletier and Mackey.

The people who want Gaudreau and Tkachuk gone should be careful what they wish for. Obviously the playoffs were disappointing, but take away two elite players and it will indeed be very dark times especially considering there will be zero assets coming back with the Johnny situation.
This is a hard league to win in. Teams are so close and we’ve seen plenty of examples of good times dropping out early like the Panthers. McDavid and Drai exposed us and exploited our weaknesses but we also had very sub par goaltending.
Anyways the point I’m trying to make is that it’s a process. Only one team can win and it’s hard to discredit such a good season that saw us win the division. I’d rather watch that kind of hockey rather than be bottom feeders in lottery contention. Let’s be honest there, I don’t see us winning any lottery picks given this franchises luck. We don’t even get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to goals reviewed by the command centre.
