@ pooptastic_oilers
Dallas was in the finals a calendar year and a half ago (Sept 2020) and took the SC winning Blues to game 7 OT in 2019.
They're a lot like a present day Sutter Kings. Don't need to get in a high seed to push teams and do damage in the playoffs. They have a playoff style system down that every player on the roster commits to.
Way more recent success than the Oilers, better goaltending, and they play the game heavy.
Oilers beat LA at glorified regular season hockey from what I witnessed.

One of these teams should be more concerned than the other about their ability to shut down the opposition’s offence, and it’s not the one the media is blathering about.
|
Of course they're asking about the threat posed by their offense. What other threat do they have to ask about?

I don’t disagree but it is - a least to me - very difficult to gauge how teams or players are playing round to round. The Vegas Montreal series last year is an example where most people thought Montreal would get run over but they were actually playing much better than people gave them credit for. So, I have trouble wondering if McDavid is going to be the same player last round as this round. As Bingo posted the Edmonton and LA were trading chances which plays into McDavid’s game and let’s him appear other worldly. I doubt Sutter will be happy trading chances with Edmonton. I suspect the game planning focuses on slowing him down.
My big questions for this series are whether Smith can keep up to Markstrom and whether Calgary can stay out of the penalty box. If Smith can’t keep up to Markstrom and the series is mostly 5 on 5 then I think the Oilers will have a tough time.

Thinks Kane is next...he more or less claimed it's only a matter of a couple games till Archibald takes Tanev and Kylington out of the series.
It's like he forgets the 4 toughest guys in this series are on the Flames.

Guess he missed that Selke nomination or Tkachuk being 8th in league scoring at a pace Kane has never achieved.

At 31, Kane has had ONE 50 pt season.
Tkachuk has 208 pts in his last 207 games, and at 24, is just entering his prime.
"But Kane's an OILER now!!!"
And then we also have Selke finalist, Elias Lindholm.
Jason Gregor is an embarrassment to his profession.

I wanna see Mike Smith pull a Steve Smith. It’s very possible. Off of Keith or Nurse hopefully.

Other than Darren Haynes who tends to carry water for the Flames, Oilers media is on a whole other level. They don't even pretend to be objective. It's just Oilers cheer-leading and fluff pieces all the time.

It's just annoying. It's like the media has never forgot the Oilers' offence of the 80s despite all of the intervening facts and events.
I recall somewhere in the 06-10 period that the Flames were actually offensively excellent, the Oilers were completely inept, and the media were still spinning the matchup as the defensive stalwart Flames versus the firewagon Oilers. Look at the stats, guys, that's your JOB ffs. (Edit: probably 2010-11, where the Flames were 5th in the league in GF and the high octane Oilers were ... 28th.)
This season the Oilers were 7th in offense, behind such luminary offensive teams like the Minnesota Wild, St. Louis Blues and your offensively inept Calgary Flames. 7th isn't bad or anything but the media is still talking this up like we're trying to figure out answers to the '84 Oilers.

Alright, I got a bee in my bonnet about this. I decided to compare the Oilers to the Flames in offence since the lockout.
(Asterisks indicate shortened seasons due to COVID or lockout)
Some notes: - Since the lockout, the Flames have averaged 225 GF/yr with an average league rank of 15.8. The Oilers average 218 GF/yr, with an average league rank of 17.9.
- Since the lockout, the Flames have scored 116 more goals than the Oilers.
- Since the lockout, the Flames have a total goal differential of +85.
- Since the lockout, the Oilers have a total goal differential of -415.
- In the seven years of the "McDavid era", the Oilers have a total goal differential of -3.
- In the seven years of the "McDavid era", the Oilers have finished in the top 10 of league scoring 3 times, and never higher than 7th.
- In the seven years of the "McDavid era", the Oilers have outscored the
- Flames four times, and the Flames have outscored the Oilers 3 times.
- In the seven years of the "McDavid era", the Oilers have outscored the Flames by … whoops, nope, the Flames have outscored the Oilers by 9 goals.
- 2005-06 is the year where the Oilers most outscored the Flames, but actually had a worse goal differential. The Flames won the division despite being 28th in league scoring.
- In 09-10, the Oilers outscored the Flames but allowed 74 more goals. The Oilers finished with 62 points, the Flames 90.

Nurse is inconsistent, Keith is washed, Barrie is horrible in his end, Kulak is just another guy, and Ceci is average. Flames top pair had 98pts this year. Hanifin Qi’s reaching his potential as a top pair guy and Anderson had a breakout year. If Tanev can play he is a key shift down guy and great pair with Kylington. Flames have the best third pair in the league and built for the playoffs in Gudbransen and Zadorov.
Flames have a clear advantage in net. Markstrom is a Vezina finalist who had an incredible first round. Smith is playing well for a while now but we all know he can be broken and can fall apart any game. He is 40 years old.
Flames also have the advantage when it comes to coaching. Oiler fans seem to be in love with Woodcroft and they had a great record under him but Sutter is all time. Multiple cups, many playoff series wins, a lock for the Jack Adams. He has this team playing consistent and they have all bought in. They stick with it and have dominated teams 5 on 5 all year.
*TLDR*
Oilers have the best player
Flames have better depth, defense, goalie, and coach.
That is why we are largely being picked to win the series and I for one agree but definitely am nervous. Really hoping the Flames can win in 5 and avoid a long series.

You should really try watching games other than Calgary. Kulak played top 4 mins all the playoffs last year on way to the finals. Nurse is a legit top pairing dman who is very difficult to play against. Barrie and Bouchard can move the puck better than anyone on the Flames D. Ceci was excellent in the first round. I'll give you the goalie advantage but the Oilers haven't struggled to score on him since he went to Calgary. The Oilers are deeper up front and the d is closer than you think. I hope Tanev is in so McDavid can walk him on national TV.

Hahahhahahahahahahaha. No, forward core is awful in edmonton, pulji is a 2nd liner in ur world he wouldn’t be on flames 2nd line. Kylington and tanev are better puck movers then Barrie and Bouchard any day of the week, smith is insanely shaky and can be rattled at any time. Not to mention… YOU TOOK A REBUILDING TEAM WITHOUT TWO OF THEIR BEST PLAYERS TO GAME 7!!!!!

It is true, without our 3rd/4th fastest Dman what will we do to counter the other teams speed.
I agree in a foot race Conner is faster than all of our Dmen. But they've lost like 40 games this year where the same can be said about the team they were playing.
Hope Tanev gets healthy, luckily the Flames have some depth there.
