It is absolutely the only reason. Oettinger should have allowed ten more goals in these playoffs. The Flames should have beaten Dallas in 5.
The Flames didn’t show up after the 1st period tonight
Markstrom for the most part played just as well in the series. The Flames inconsistency is the problem. Even Sutter said that. They have yet learned how hard it is to win.

Honestly, win one home game and on to the next. Had we lost game 5 and won tonight the situation would be practically the exact same but we wouldn't have all the edgelord drama of people questioning the heart of players, already talking about offseason changes, $10-$12 million/year for that player? rebuilds and all that crap.
When Flames fans ask why they have only been out of the 1st round twice since 1989 and never as the favorite (in 7 tries!) going into the series they should understand that the only continuity in the team between all those disappointing attempts is their fanbase that creates that 'Leafs-like' negative energy aura in the city. At best we have fans nervously twitching in the stands waiting for something bad to happen and at worst we have people already writing this season's obituary and swearing off cheering for them forever or until its fashionable to be back. Eric Francis will use this to sell papers. The Flames themselves will feel it on the ice should a bad bounce go against them in the first period in game 7 and the crowd falls silent and sits on their hands for the rest of the game making even harder to stage a comeback than it already is against a hot goaltender and a team that's trap happy and good at doing it.
So everyone who has tickets for game 7 do everyone a favor: Show up excited, wear red (leave your expensive RR Blasty, your brand new retro white, your white authentic pedestal, your 2004 vintage white Iginla jersey, your 1980s white lucky sweater or anything else not red that for whatever dumb reason you might think could be acceptable to wear to the game at home), and cheer your a$$ off right from the anthems right through to the ending buzzer or OT winner. Should Marky let a bad one in, shake it off immediately, and yell Go Flames Go as loud as you can before the next faceoff. Should a bad puck bounce in off a d man's butt and put the Flames down at a crucial part of the game, just reload, yell Go Flames Go even louder. Flames holding a 1 goal lead late into the game, don't pucker up silent, get even louder! Give this team your all, because it's not the team's fault you're traumatized by Ray Whitney scoring in game 7 OT in 1995 and other irrelevant old playoff moments from bygone eras. If you aren't prepared to that, do everyone a favor and go out to the red lot and transfer your ticket to one of those fans who will.
Should they lose you have all summer to be a complete edge lord, cuss out Gaudreau & Tkachuk as not deserving the money they will inevitably ask for, Toffoli, Treliving, the guy in the Harvey the Hound suit, Jill who works in the ticket office, that guy in IT who vetted the PORTpass system, whatever. Months and months for you to stew in that crap. Just don't go there now, let that energy out after the season's done, whenever that might be and give this team as much lift as the 2004 and 2015 teams.

Bowness got this team to play disciplined the only way that was going to get them wins. And they are tied in the series.
Sutter has n underperformers up and down the lineup and is being forced into the stars game.
Forced into playing discipline? What is Stars' game, enlighten me, since you are so knowledgeable in analyzing Flames' play and how they under perform.
This game wasn't just about Oettinger being Oettinger again. We barely got over 30% faceoff wins, and we were out hit as well. Sutter needs to go off on them about winning faceoffs again. And big Z needs to flatten Benn. Please.

Today I was talking to my 5 year old about my favorite moment in sports.
Gelinas Game 7 OT winner.
I was explaining how it meant so much due to the 14 years without winning a playoff series and 7 years not making the playoffs.
Not to mention the fact Vancouver won game 6 on triple OT, then tying in the last minute in game 7 to force OT again.
I was devastated.
I had no hope.
And then... "Here's Igina off the boards, Yelle a shot, Auld save, another, they score and it's Martin Gelinas the former Canuck! And the Calgary Flames will end the cup curse and move on to Detroit on round 2!"
My favorite moment in all of sport doesn't happen without the preceding immense amount of heartbreak.
Sunday.
Game 7.
We've been the better team in 6 out of the 6 games played.
Tough to see the frustration from guys like Gaudreau at the end of a game they let slip away.
They get another chance but it's seventh heaven for the Stars and hell for the Flames - who wanted to move on without the uncertainty of a winner-take-all scenario.
Then he should be gone for being an idiot. Can't just use injury as an excuse every playoffs.
Especially if that injury came in a pointless, stupid fight that gained nothing & motivated the other team.
Injury or not, his immaturity has been obvious.
I get the frustration and don’t blame people who are down on the team. Like someone mentioned, this isn’t just a team who snuck into the playoff but rather won the division with three 40 goal scorers. Also, 31 out of 33 seasons where the team has either not qualified for the playoffs or lost in the first round. That is just pathetic and how could you not be skeptical going into Sunday with those types of statistics.
Good on people who are optimistic about game 7, however, history hasn’t been kind to this team and you start to wonder if the trend will continue.
Tkachuk now has 3 goals and 9 pts in 21 playoff games, he is the complete opposite of a playoff player
The team for some odd reason continues to challenge this kid on his blocker side and loose that battle every time, does anybody on the team or coaching staff pick up on stuff like this?
Thats the 2nd loss in a row, down 1, they don't sustain any pressure or even gain possession in the dallas end, does anybody on this team have a clutch gene in their body?
I've never ever once in my 36 years on this planet witnessed a goalie own the opposition like this kid has this series, game after game. Do true Stanley cup contending teams even allow this to happen? Eventually they break the dam right? Why can't the Flames?
I fully am and expect to get our hearts broken again on Sunday, its the Calgary Flames way. One of the most cursed disappointing franchises in the NHL, but even if they win, are we a cup threat? I honestly don't think so.
I just want the guy to tone down the gooning. We all know how good he is when he focuses on just playing instead of stirring #### up. That fight with Klingberg back in game 3 was just unnecessary. And if that fight actually broke his hand that makes it even worse.

Yes, if we have lost the game 5 and won this one, every one would be whooping it up, but the series still tied. I just don't understand.
Lindell was hilarious trying to run away from Zadorov in the scrum at the end. And what was that that Stone was holding on too? A wet rat? Dallas will not fight with Gudbranson or Looch. Take for instance Benn. Zadorov isn't a great fighter so Benn wants him.
This team isn’t the typical Flames team we’ve seen in the playoffs. They have reliable goaltending and are the better team most of the time. Every other Flames playoff team since 2004 has been shaky. 2015 was a series against another “weak” team in Vancouver so that’s an anomaly.
I love how they gooned it up at the end of this game. That’s what the 2004 team did when they lost and it always got them on track for the next game.
I have faith we will come out strong in game 7 at home and move on to round 2.
