They have no choice but to go back to Smith for the next game. They've already anointed him their guy. And they can't neuter him, got to let Smitty be Smitty. Otherwise you risk deflating his ego which is really the only thing keeping him in the NHL these days.

That was probably the worst possible outcome of a game for the Oilers. They think they deserved to win too. Won't correct anything, just arrogantly trot out the same lineup playing the same way. Heck they even got a lot of calls! What happens if they encounter some non-self-induced obstacles?

Koskinen has been wildly inconsistant over the last 5 games he's played. Two absolute stinker, one meh average and two pretty good games. Mikko is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.

I think that the Oilers are trapped by their bad goaltending, and now Oiler fans are clamoring for Skinner to get the next start, which is stunningly a great idea because throwing a inexperienced goalie into the fray can only lead to good things.

Its funny how quickly the worm has turned my friends, in playoff previews. Sportsnet sceamed, Mike Smith is back baby, he's leading the Oilers to the promised land. Edmonton Oiler fans gushed, including one here. Smith is a better playoff goalie then Markstrom. He's been god like and that will continue. Little Petey Jones cried "Where's my dog, I left him around here somewhere and now he's gone."

Now one game into it the Experts at Sportsnet are, "He was awful never looked in control, and his usual one flub per game destroyed an Oilers team that was dominant my friends, dominant over the Kings". Oiler fans were apoplectic "F that guy, he should do the right thing and retire right F'ing now" Meanwhile little Petey Smith was telling his parents "I don't want a new dog, I want spot"

Kings out chanced them
Scoring chances and high danger

5 on 5 the Kings were the better team...Oilers only damage was on the PP on some iffy calls. If the Kings can stay out of the box they win the series. Hopefully the refs take a look a the diving and are embarrassed

I love that the loss was directly as a result of goaltending.

Wow I forgot about that prediction

For any one that knows the Oilers and knows Smith, you knew the probability was high though.

At 01:35 Mike Smith says thunk, I couldn't believe it. This whole post-game is just superb.

"No one woulda thunk we woulda won 16 Straight"

"It's nothing we haven't dealt with before" = Yes, I've definitely lost us games in the past, with my personal actions.

"I'm sure we'll have to deal with it again..." = Yes, I will most certainly sh*t the bed in epic fashion again if given the chance to do so.

Gotta love it.

Crazy thing is he did it earlier in the game too...saved his bacon that time although the shot went through him and just caught his back leg and slid wide. You would think he would tone it down after dodging the bullet.

Play by play on ESPN telecast of Leafs game (buccigross?) said we need to get Matthews and Mcdavid deep into the playoffs. What a dumb comment.

It would be best for the game to fast track them both to oppose each other. Finland starting May 13 sounds fine with me

Whats that old hockey proverb?

"You're never in trouble in the Playoffs until you lose a game on Home Ice."

Is there an old hockey proverb for when they lose their 2nd game on home ice? Trying to get myself prepared for tomorrow.

Unfortunately Friedman and others seem to want the NHL to be the NBA instead of the more team oriented sport it is.

This is how I see it too. I also love how what went right for them here is exactly what's wrong with them as a team. McDavid should definitely go solo mode more often because he scored that way! They should put Draisaitl and McDavid together and play them as much as possible because that also got a goal! When trailing, they should whine and dive for powerplays!

^On the video above, Connor's body language when Smith is talking about making mistakes is amazing. Who thought it would be a good idea to put these two out together? They can't even look at each other!

To be fair, I doubt any other Oilers are less sick of Mike Smith.

I never get the impression that McDavid thinks highly of his teammates. There have been times he's given the impression that he thinks they suck or are beneath him.
