Firing her Chief of Staff isn't even what mattered, it's openly lying about the details of his termination. If the details aren't required to be disclosed, then don't disclose them. But if you are going to disclose them, you best not be lying about it.
Also hiring him in the first place. It’s not like he is an unknown person.

The firing and severance is the only reasonable part of the situation.

He’s not though. He’s an awful politician but he’s a decent person. He’s currently running the Pacific Crest Trail for charity. I think he should be commended for that.

That was the nicest thing I could think of to say about her other than the obligatory "at least she isn't Farkas."

What do you think her biggest accomplishment is so far?

I forgot about declaring a climate emergency, I guess some voters might be in favour of that.

I have been following that a bit and he seems more likeable outside of the realm of politics.

Jan Damery the only one I can think would have been better, but as a political rookie, it's a shame she didn't run for council instead.

We know Farkas' deal and Davison was an empty suit

I'm not wasting my vote on a candidate who doesn't have a chance, unless I think that person would be a great mayor. None of the "low vote count" people fit that category for my this time. So I look at those who have a chance and who I think would be best of those options. And I absolutely prefer Gondek to Farkas or Davison (if you want to count him as having a chance).

I've heard of a few of Farkas's personal plans, like that run, and was surprised because I absolutely HATE his politics. He does seem like a good guy... just not someone I would ever vote for.

Retired city councillor here. The mayor has been oriented (by law) as have the rest of council and should know how taxes work.

City Council is learning the lesson that math is hard or maybe someone is skimming off the top because the previously reported $147M surplus is now actually $143M.

Rather, it's administration for whom "math is hard", as they're the ones who told council the uncommitted surplus was $147M. Then they revised it to $143M, and then they said, "Oh, but we forgot to count $38M of stuff the last council committed to at the end of 2021, so it's actually only $105M."

Not sure how you fault council for it.

Seems like a lot of silly pearl-clutching around this story. I'd be very interested to know exactly how administration presented this to council (any caveats about finality?) and how the $147M figure made it to the media...may have been from simply watching the meeting, where it's possible the media ignored any context/caveats.

CFO may have screwed up on omitting the $38M, but any of the 15 councillors could also have asked about it if they were on top of things.

Ultimately it's a very good story that's now just a good story.

Easy. You decide ahead of time that council will do a bad job, then you mould every piece of news to fit into that.

I can remember a time when a surplus was a good thing.

Pretty sure it was this council - they were elected Oct '21 and spent this Nov '21.

I'm looking forward to this amount gradually declining day by day.

That was all I could think of. What would you say she has accomplished so far?

What would I say who has accomplished so far? My councillor has accomplished nothing except this stupid bird thing, which only backs up my initial suspicions of her that she would be yet another pet project councillor who prioritizes things that are visible without actually being impactful. In essence, your attributing that to Jyoti makes Penner seem better than she is. It was not a defense of Gondek -- I mean technically I guess it ends up that way, but not my intention. If pressed, I can't really think what Gondek has accomplished (positive) off the top of my head. She tried to prevent the CPS funding boost which would have been a plus in my books, but failed to rally council on that point and the budget increase passed anyway.

Gotcha, I was reading that as also a defense of Gondek.
