I agree with the majority of the critics on this one, but clearly it wasn't for everyone.
I guess the masses don't like a thinking man's movie, anymore. (kidding, in case president_james_taylor needed his hand held through that comment)
Nope made no sense, why the space monkeys and pirates? presumably the director read the script and thought 'wow dude travels to space to argue with his dad, bit dull, what can we add to jazz it up a bit, yes man eating space monkeys, who cares why there are monkeys in space, how they got loose, how they learnt to move in null G as if they were born to it rather than just huddling in a ball terrified out of their monkey brains, yes they work, pirates, everyone loves pirates, who cares that its the moon so there is no where for pirates to hide, no food for them to eat, no point at all attacking random rovers driving around, lets just have some effing pirates'
I doubt I'll be able to explain it to you in a way that you'd find convincing, if you hated it that much. Like I say I just think that's a shame you aren't getting out of it what other people seem to. One of the main things that Villeneuve does is create atmosphere, and once that's established he can create tension for the viewer, but if that just isn't working on your particular brain software, I'm not sure there's anything to be done about that. I mean, can you watch the border crossing scene in Sicario without feeling the hair on the back of your neck stand up?
I haven't seen it. I was going to but the buzz was that it wasn't great. I always have a list of movies I need to watch and the list always seems to grow longer rather than shorter but I'll add it and let you know.
I'm not sure where I'd put Interstellar. I thought it was something that everyone who likes movies should see, but I don't know about top 25. Then again, I've never attempted to put together a top 25 films list in any genre.
I'd be genuinely curious to see you take a crack at a top 25 sci-fi movies, as I've enjoyed many of the ones you speak highly of. If top 25 is too daunting, maybe a top 15?

Monkeys? Space pirates? WTactualF?
I have no recollection of any of that. Here's where I'll concede I smoked a big phat bowl before the movie and just kind of vibed to the mood and score, but I truly don't remember monkeys and pirates. That sounds terrible.

Ad Astra had its flaws for sure and I don't know if it was worthy of Oscar buzz.
But it deserves points for creativity. I enjoyed aspects of it. The story wasn't really rewarding but there was a 'space future' depicted that I've never seen in a movie before. So i can't hate on some of the originality there, as strange as some of it was. I liked the various bases on planets and moons with contingents of different nations at each installation. And the sort of space airports/hubs in the film. It kind of got the wheels of your imagination rolling. That was honestly cool.

Now I want to watch this!

One of my favorite movie scenes ever! Now I am going to watch Sicario tonight.
That doesn’t add up. The Academy asked him to leave and he said no so they just said….well ok? Anyone else would be subject to physical removal from security and/or police

Ahem...back to the more important discussion...
And yet you can't find a way to enjoy Dune or BR2049? They seem well suited to your phat bowl genre.

Yeah, maybe that's the missing ingredient. I kinda find it a bit trashy at my age to be smoking bowls before public movies, so I don't do it often. Maybe I'll give dune another go at home and smoke a joint to see if it helps me tap into whatever the fata it is you guys are seeing in this movie.

All I can ask is an open mind. So kudos for not dismissing the alternate view.
Also, the story is only partially told in the first film. There's more to come. This is just the set up. I'm very much looking forward to the 2nd Villeneuve Dune film.
