This quote stands out on its own merits. Love it.

For fun, I just looked up a list of best picture winners
The last one I've even seen was 2009, The Hurt Locker, which as someone that's a big fan of military history, that might be one of the worst movies I've ever seen
'06 and '07 winners were awesome though (The Departed and No Country for Old Men)
But the last decade.... I haven't even heard of most of these

Would 100% watch Spotlight, it's an important movie. 2015 was an amazing list of nominated films; The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, The Martian, The Revenant, Mad Max:Fury Road.
Besides Bridge of Spies, which I liked, the other five are some of my favourites of the decade.

Never saw Bridge of Spies. The Revenant was barely okay. The Martian and The Big Short were absolutely great. Mad Max was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Felt like I was being Punk'd sitting through that hot mess of a non-story with non-characters.

So not so much with the Star Wars either?

Ya some of the winners for Best Picture have been somewhat forgettable. But there are some absolutely incredible movies in there too. Parasite is a must watch if you haven't seen it, same with Moonlight, where Nicholas Britell (Succession score) did the score. Nominated movies like over the last decade like One Upon A Time in Hollywood, If Beale Street Could Talk, Wolf of Wall Street, Whiplash, The Revenant, Arrival, La La Land, I could go on, are incredible movies.

I'll be honest, although I think he's a great actor, there's definitely just something about Leo that just irritates me and is probably why I've steered away from these.
I'll have to give 'em a go

Just did the same. I saw some of Hurt Locker when it happened to be on tv, same with The Departed… they were ….movies. Last one I saw in a theatre was LOTR in 2004.
I made a point of watching Hugo (runner up) when it came out on demand because it got so much fanfare. Meh 🫤

I liked Dune, but that’s a great take. When I think of all the intrigue and character-building scenes from the book that Villeneuve omitted so he could fit in endless establishing shots of spaceships landing, blowing sand, and people walking down hallways… Terrence Mallick is right.

I saw some of Bridge of spies on a cross Atlantic flight… while it was interesting, it also put me to sleep, and I can’t sleep on planes, so not sure how I feel about it . The Martian was great.

Never been a huge gangster movie guy, plus “Leo” is just such a D-bag. Best part of Titanic was when he sank.

Yeah, I'm surprised people are still wowed by CGI. That shouldn't carry a movie. At this point, I just expect the physical setting of a movie to look real, so I don't blow my load all over the place when a fantastical setting does look real. I'm there for a story and character development. Without those, you just have a snooze fest. Good for the non-thinkers in the audience, but for the rest of us we need a little more.
