We're all talking about that joke like it was some biting devestating line that would've left the target weeping for weeks.. it was a bad dated easy cheap joke from the friggin 90s.
What a sensitive egomaniacs Jada and Will Smith are.

Obviously Smith was wrong but Rock isn't innocent. He could have made a joke about anyone, about anything. Or make a dig a documentaries, the category he was presenting.
"You know what, most of you think I don't watch documentaries. Oh no. No, no , no. I do. I watch alot. i even made one!
In fact! I watched a documentary on Marijuana last night…
…that’s probably how I’ll watch all documentaries from now on."
But he and Smith have history and he purposely got that shot in.
So just a contrarian. Chris Rock is innocent, he made a crappy joke at an awards show. Not a crime.

He made a nothing joke and an emasculated man tried to show how super tough he was. Will Smith is 100% at fault. Just stop.

A woman overcomes adversity and shaves her head as a physical show of empowerment and goes on to achieve what the establishment told her couldn't be achieved. That's GI Jane. Very lightweight stuff.
And then I think of Chris Rock, who has made jokes, movies and a TV show that talks openly about the physical abuse that he suffered growing up as a small kid with a very quick wit and not enough filter. Being assaulted on what is the biggest stage in the world has me feeling for the guy, considering his background.

Chris Rock was lucky that only Will Smith came up and slapped him. If all her boyfriends got up it would have been one heck of a line. Would have had to play the end-speech music.
I was thinking about Carr specifically and what he would have done in this scenario given his dedication to doing crowd work. He gets heckled a lot because he basically invites it, but the response is, stop the show and deal with the heckler for slightly too long and live in the uncomfortable moment because the awkwardness is itself a source of comedy.
So I don't know for sure, but I suspect if Jimmy Carr was in Rock's place, he'd have done at least a couple of minutes of HIGHLY tasteless jokes at the Smiths' expense, Academy Awards audience or not. Which of course is one of several reasons he'd never get the chance.
Bill Burr would also have been an interesting guy to have had in that position.

"in the Hood, even if you are defending your girl, you are still going to have to scrap"
Yep. Hood rulez, man. Chris Rock would've laid a beat down on this man on live tv. Anything else and this is fake. /sarcasm
will Smith is trying his best to keep his composure up there. And he practically loses it once he starts yelling at Chris Rock. The emotion was about to overwhelm him.
Chris Rock's first reaction is to almost defend himself. He sort of plants his feet and sets his fist and then remembers where he is. His response is "wow" because what else would it be? have you ever had something so entirely unexpected happen to you? that fist response is always "wow"

So what, though. Even if it was a dumb joke that Smith would have taken from anyone else but Rock.
Do the fake laugh, be angry on the inside and deal with the person later.
Instead, he sat there, did the fake laugh, then 30 seconds later decided he was righteously angry and had to storm the stage?
Then we had to hear him make the speech he did, and a lot of that seems pretty off considering his actions a few minute prior.

mainstream entertainment is already working very hard to serve you food that tastes like nothing. It will be interesting to see how much more they will serve in the coming years.
yeah, I saw this live and thought it was part of an act...I mean, it was such a innocuous line that I couldn't reconcile the reaction Smith had...he was laughing at the joke in the cut before...
Was the joke in poor taste? I mean I can see that, but it was so minor, its not like it elicited gasps from the audience...my only thought is that when the camera cut away from Smith laughing, his wife was actually upset about it and that's what set him off?
Anyways, pretty surprised at Smith losing his cool like that.
It would be insane if Rock didn't even write the joke, as mentioned on twitter earlier in the thread.
This isn't even really about his wife. It's about him making a big show about "defending her honor" since everyone in that room, and probably watching on TV, knows what a farce their relationship is. The guy probably lives in constant embarrassment, he way overcompensated.
This was about Will Smith.

So Chris Rock is in the wrong because he picked the wrong target? I don't think that's how right and wrong work

Yeah, I'm relatively certain he was reading his lines off a teleprompter for a joke that probably a dozen people signed off on.
That being said though, the inevitable Comedy Central 'Roast of Will Smith' is going to be a blood-bath.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Cause then it turns it into a final straw type scenario.
Still absolutely the wrong course of action, but that would be Smith's only lifeline here. Otherwise he looks like an unstable maniac, because the joke alone didn't justify the response. People in the industry will be taking second thoughts before working with the guy now I'm sure.
"Well, ya do crazy things for love" isn't an apology.
