It was barely a joke. "Your hair is short now, must be for a role." It certainly wasn't mean spirited.

Rock said worse when he hosted the Oscars in 2016. Gervais has said worse at literally every hosting opportunity he's had.

The only person who crossed a line or looks like a loser is Will Smith.

Of course, this has led to a wave of possibly the dumbest, most annoying people co-opting this into some commentary on their personal gripes with society. Everything from commentary about spousal and parental abuse, trans rights, political correctness, war, etc. Sometimes a thing that happens is just a thing that happens and doesn't need to be related in an abstract way to something else going on in the world to prove your point. It's petty and dumb.

Good on Will Smith. That type of humor is so stupid and lame and I'm 100% fine with slapping someone who thinks that stuff is funny and okay. Also let's not kid ourselves, Chris Rock would have just loved it if Smith had just stuck to words. Now he clearly got a bit shook up, and that's good. Just because you get paid to make others laugh is not an excuse to be a scumbag.

I mean, it was such a lame joke it's not even a joke if she's not there, the only real punchline is "ooh, look I'm being rude to someone in the audience". It's a great example of "taboo breaking" humor done badly. "Oh look, I'm insulting someone for their disabilities". Soooo brave

Gervais, who I also don't find particularly funny, at least roasts people for things they do, and things people totally deserve to get roasted for. You know, roasting DiCaprio for still only dating young girls even though he's getting close to 50, or talking about the racism of Hollywood press, or about Apple's relationship with China, or just the general hypocrisy of the supposed liberals in the audience. In general his target is hypocrisy and immorality, or bad movies. Stuff people did, not something they are.

Making fun of someone's disability is just school bully stuff, it's just Chris Rock being an unimaginative scumbag, and I'm totally for slapping stupid scumbags who make lame insult jokes thinking they're funny. Oscars or not.

I don't get why Americans are so fascinated with this type of low-brow insult humor and roasting, as if there was some taboo there to be broken still. It's never anything clever. They should watch more British comedy shows to see how this stuff is done well.
I'm still stunned that the bottom post followed the top post without any sense of irony. I guess the lesson is read more and post less.

You'll have to come up with some kind of plausible motive if you're going to convince anyone.

Also, I've seen stupid fights in real life where the guys are smirking and laughing at each other. Chris had a dumbfounded kind of smile on his face, and Smith looked like he was smirking at himself like he couldn't believe he just did that.

Chris Rock was smiling and laughing, up until the point he was smacked. Then he wasn't.

I can't decide which is the sillier take: the entire incident is a conspiracy with no logical goal, or that Chris Rock is a scumbag for a PG-13 GI Jane joke while citing British comedy as sublime art.

Have you heard a Jimmy Carr joke?

People often smile to disguise other emotions, especially, when they're not sure how to react.

You can really see Smith's boxing skills shine in the slow-mo: keeps a consistent pace until he's got perfect stance and position, and then snaps off the slap very quickly, you can see he's only loading up for a few frames and his body doesn't have to move much and he just fires it off, putting his whole body into it.

Rock's saving grace was that Will didn't load up heavy, choosing the higher percentage play with quicker strike, giving up power rather than give the smaller man an opportunity to turn away. Will probably enjoys a 50+ lb weight advantage on Rock, so he probably chose not to kill him here. Kudos to Rock for successfully anticipating and absorbing the shot in the little time he had.

It was pretty cool to see Tony Hawk was at the awards, especially so soon after his injury.

This is only sort-of true. You can still cheat while in an open or polyamorous relationship. The impression I got from watching the interview that it came out in was that...it wasn't known about/consensual with Will, which would make it cheating (though we'd need to know what their specific relationship boundaries are to actually make that judgement)

The Oscars gig is stand-up. Little throwaway TV-friendly jokes made between presentations and montages. Are you expecting the deft wit of a David Mitchell monologue? The acidic satire of The Thick of It?

Maybe next year the Academy could get the UK’s top standup to host the show. I’m sure Jimmy Carr wouldn’t stoop to mean or offensive jokes for a laugh.

Rock is in the wrong. He isn't the host, he doesn't need to crack jokes, he's just presenting. He's presenting documentaries! A serious category! And he could have made a joke about anyone else in that crowd or he could have just gone up there and said how great documentaries are. So to me, it was targeted.

Presenting, hosting, it doesn't matter. He's a comedian and when a comedian is brought out on stage, it's going to be to do comedian things.

All of which is irrelevant because no matter how you feel about what he said, the solution is not to get up on stage and assault him

Yeah credit to Rock for eating that slap and then doing his job without hardly missing a beat.

Imagine getting a comedian to present on a stage and having them tell jokes!

I thought the exhortation to “punch up” was metaphoric. Maybe not.

Though I have my doubts Smith would have struck someone who was higher than him on the pecking order. If there’s one thing Hollywood celebrities understand it’s exactly where each and every person in the room fits in the pecking order, and who they have to suck up to and who they can #### on.

Is this another of your "just want to be a contrarian" takes or is this what you actually think?

The whole show is scripted, including all of the jokes. I’m sure Rock had to okay the material that he was given, but it’s not as though he was just off-the-cuff freelancing up there. A half-dozen people would have signed off on the joke during writing and rehearsals.

Because absolutely losing your cool in public is 'brave' & noble, and totally not a red flag that needs to be addressed by that individual.

Obviously Smith was wrong but Rock isn't innocent. He could have made a joke about anyone, about anything. Or make a dig a documentaries, the category he was presenting.

"You know what, most of you think I don't watch documentaries. Oh no. No, no , no. I do. I watch alot. i even made one!
In fact! I watched a documentary on Marijuana last night…
…that’s probably how I’ll watch all documentaries from now on."

But he and Smith have history and he purposely got that shot in.
