I would trade Mangiapane without hesitation while his value is high. I think he has the highest value and his current year of goalscoring makes me feel like it won't be sustainable. He's not the key to chemistry of an entire line, he just has been a good opportunist this year. It reminds me a bit of the old Monahan days except Monaham would get his share of assists along with the 30 goals. In fact I would try to bundle Monahan's last year with Mangiapane's RFA rights together so someone will take on the salary so we can try to keep the rest together.
I would rather keep the chemistry of current D corp, including Zadorov and the character he brings than keep Mangiapane. That said, finding a way to keep the chemistry of Gaudreau, Lindholm, and Tkachuk together is paramount above all.

Would like to share a Flames game experience we will always remember last night.
Both sons at Flames/Wild game with me. We have seats on the glass.
One of my son's was wearing a Ukrainian hat in support, we are of Ukrainian ancestry.
While skating around the Flames bench, Zadorov saw my son's hat during one of the breaks in the period and came over and tapped the glass and then said loudly "nice hat".
My son was so surprised. He then went on social media and found evidence of Zadorov supporting Panarin's anti-Putin view from some time ago.
Zadorov will always be welcome on the Flames in our view.

This tidbit and glimpses of Z's interaction and support of his team mates, his joy at Gudbranson getting a goal, helping Kylington off the ice, etc. makes me see him as a real character guy. I really hope there is some way we can sign him.

Trading Mangiapane for the right return isn't a terrible idea, but trading him to make room for re-signing Zadorov — as good as his play has absolutely been over the last few weeks — would be extremely disappointing.

This is correct.
Calgary may well need to move Mangiapane as they can get some cheap current assets for him, and they can utilize the saved cap space on Tkachuk and Johnny.
But moving him to sign Zadorov? That’s crazy talk.

I don't understand any of this talk.
No team sacrifices core pieces before moving lesser players, even if it means getting nothing in return or paying a price to move them.
Assuming Johnny, Chucky and Mang all can come to terms to stay then Monahan and/or Lucic will be moved to help make it work. I'd also throw Backlund into this group.
Vegas had cap problems, so they gave away Fleury, and unloaded Schmidt. Tampa had cap problems, so they gave away Johnson and let Coleman walk for nothing to protect their core pieces.
The Flames aren't going to offload young, key pieces in order to keep players like Zadorov, Lucic, Monahan or Backlund.

LOL, I think Mangi is more than just cheap assets. He's also restricted free agent. So, it's a bonus for the Flames organization. I'm sure Tre will work something out to hopefully sign both Z and G before they hit the free agency market. If not, they still have the rights to Mangi and each of their restricted free agent players. The way with how Mangi has been playing for this past 3 years, it'll be stupid for the Flames not to recognize that. He's the real deal!

Hearing Sutter's comments, he is always talking about what Zadorov and Gudbranson has brought to the table and the first things he talked to Tre about this year is that he noticed Markstrom and the D getting bullied a lot so his first objective was to get size on the blue line with Z+G. Now, he's saying how much the team's character has changed because of this in the post games.
I think those two are worth more to this team than outsiders immediately see.

For those suggesting unloading Mangiapane. Back away from the crack pipe, go get help .
Also. We can look at the lineup after the season/ playoffs after we've actually done something.
Let's not put the cart before the dead horse that gets beaten around here so much.
And by the way....I'll take a team that makes the playoffs yearly as a norm over what I've been cheering for since 1980 ....this is the normal I want to see from us going forward.
Loving this winning culture/mentality with Darryl back ....I hope allot rubs off on Huska, MacLean, Muller, Treliving and Love .

By cheap assets, I mean things like first round picks, good prospects.
Mangipane could be moved without taking cap back.
The Flames cannot keep the band together unless they magically find someone to simply take Lucic and Monny off their hands.

It wouldn't exactly be magic.
Either you move them for very little return, or you pay a price to trade them away. Both players will be entering their final contract years, and both have been solid players for the best team in their conference.
The cost to move players has gone down since Carolina bent Toronto over on Marleau. To move a player with term, Gostisbehere, the Flyers spent a 2nd and a 7th - and that deal had 2 years left on it. If we have to spend a 2nd to be able to retain our key core pieces? Then you spend that 2nd.

The thing I worry about is we've seen in the past on other teams, they sign their fan favorite guys with size and their big contracts don't work out. I've loved Zadorov but I wouldn't want us to move pieces to make room to sign him to a 4x4 type of deal for example

If the Flames win the cup, maybe Lucic retires? Although one of his best buds is on the team now so he may want to stick around longer.

Not sure if the Flames have the room but Zad is well worth 4x4. He isn't just big. He also is young and has skills he is just now starting to put together.

Monahans stock will rise with a successful playoff run (hopefully) and give him some value in an final year. Treliving just has to make magic happen with offloading Lucic and we would be sitting in a decent position. Monahans contract money will go to Tkachuk and Gaudreau raises, Lucic money goes to Mangiapanes raise and replacement level players/young contracts.

I agree with your post, and likely most here do too, still you can't overpay for these specific 2 players going forward- there is almost no way that ends well
options would seem to be
1. one (less likely) both back on value deals
2. another swing at the wheel with similar gambles on player type
3. some combination of 1 and 2 above but either way with the understanding that what they've done this year rubs off on the team in general (although their 500 pounds helps)

This is the problem with running too close to the cap every year. They couldn't afford to go long with Mangiapane, and so now they're going to pay for it, which gives them even less flexibility going forward.
