I actually don't know, but it seems plausible. We are still talking about a 5/6 dean here right? The bar isn't too high.

Mackey’s pretty average sized for a D. Listed at 6’2” 190lb. Zadorov is 6’6” 235lb. Only Kylington is a smaller D on this team (Anderson is 6’1” but he’s 215 lb which is maybe the more important stat).

^^^ and Gudbranson is 6'5 - 222lbs
Those two are going to be darn near impossible to replace for the cap space that will likely be remaining after Treliving gets finished dealing with Gaudreau/Tkachuk/Mangiapane/Kylington.
Never thought I'd be saying that 6 months ago.
You'd hope that between Mackey/Valimaki/Kinvall plus UFA's you will be able to replace the minutes and all, but it will be tough to replace the minutes with such big, mean, tough SOBs who also have a combined 1000+ games of NHL experience

He is not tiny but according to hockeydb he's only 6'02 and 190 lb, then again compare to Zadorov's 6'4" 234 lb that's pretty tiny. Or am I looking at the wrong Mackey?

Nope. Like I said above, he’s be the second smallest on the D corps if he was on the team now.

Mackey would do just fine filling in on the bottom pair for Z, should he leave. He's 6'2", has a little offensive skill, plays physical, and will drop the gloves (he has 66 PIM in 41 games). He's not 6'6", but I can almost guarantee he's a better fighter than Z.

Maybe Gudbranson can be brought back for a 3 x 3 or something in that neighborhood?
He's been really good this season, probably better and more consistent than Zadorov overall.
Hanifin - Andersson
Kylington - Tanev
Mackey - Gudbranson
Would be nice to have one of them at least.

There will be more Gudbranson type guys out there for Treliving to find and for Sutter to turn into a capable 5-6 defencemen, I’m least worried about that position.

Mackey’s tough. I don’t know about his reach and his stick position, which Z is pretty good at. Z has come along way with defensive positioning. Of course, Sutter would be Mackey’s coach too.

I agree that Gudbranson has been the better of the two, maybe just less noticeable due to being more calm and steady. He can do something very well though, that Z can't, and that's fight. I love the nuclear deterents we have in Lucic and EG.

Oh man, giving Gudbranson 3 x 3 would not be a good idea.

Agreed, Gudbranson has been great this year under Sutter but that doesn't mean he will be great in 3 years time under another coach.

Agreed. Not only is he crossing into that stage of his career where Father Time will begin to have larger impacts on him, but the organization as a whole are also transitioning into a stage where we can't spend $3M on 3rd pairing defencemen.
Sure, acquire a $3M bottom pairing defenceman at the trade deadline for a playoff push, but teams paying market value for the top end of their roster (like the Flames will be next year for the most part) cannot afford to over-spend on depth roles.
It's also why this team cannot afford to keep Lucic and Monahan on the books next year. You can't spend that sort of money on bottom-half of the roster depth players at the expense of the top end of your roster.

Either can other teams, so those contracts will not be easily moved without taking back corresponding bad contracts or adding some real draft capital.

Yeah, was thinking fine, you move Monahan for a $3M centre but if you retain any salary or take anther salary as well, you aren’t saving a whole lot. Especially if the player isn’t as good. Lucic is easier to replace in the lineup than Monahan just because of position but you need a taker.

I think the Flames would definitely bring them both back if they could afford it. Gudbranson in particular is a guy you know they value, not just for his toughness, but he provides veteran leadership to a young group. I hope they find a way to bring him back.

Yes, he will be a classic mistake signing on July 1st (or close to it). I'm really happy with what we got from him this season, but with where we're headed in trying to sign guys and what Zadorov will command on his next contract, it's a hard no from me.

Posted in "suspend Russian player contracts" thread but asked to post in Zadorov thread as well.
Would like to share a Flames game experience we will always remember last night.
Both sons at Flames/Wild game with me. We have seats on the glass.
One of my son's was wearing a Ukrainian hat in support, we are of Ukrainian ancestry.
While skating around the Flames bench, Zadorov saw my son's hat during one of the breaks in the period and came over and tapped the glass and then said loudly "nice hat".
My son was so surprised. He then went on social media and found evidence of Zadorov supporting Panarin's anti-Putin view from some time ago.
Zadorov will always be welcome on the Flames in our view.

Who would you dump from the current squad to make room for the Increases to Johnny, Tkachuk and Mangiapane?
