I think the league initiates concussion protocol after that, even if he seems fine to Sutter. They can't mess around with that stuff anymore.

I said the medical professionals will decide...not Sutter. If he passes all tests he is playing.

Ok, but maybe I am wrong, I am definitely not an expert, but I think if a player appears to be out cold like that, the league makes them sit for week to make sure nothing pops up. Tests immediately after a head injury are not always conclusive and they may force him into concussion protocol.

I remember concussions being an almost non-issue in my younger days of watching hockey. I don't think they treated it even remotely seriously until the late 90s.

It used to be something like...

Before every season the physicians do a base test on each player.

Once put in protocol the player must then match that base test before being allowed to return and have none of the lingering symptoms associated with brain injuries.

That could be as soon as today, or it could be 6 months away. Not all concussions are the same.

No idea if this has changed but in any situation, independent physicians will make the final call.

There has been a few sports stars that have died, donating there brains to science to study the effect of longer term concussion. Found to cause some serious problems.

FYI in Aussie rules, when a player is confirmed with concussion, they have a mandated 10 days off, also 2015 no. 1 picks career derailed from it. Serious stuff

That was a scary incident, even if he’s fine his neck gotta be stiff af this morning. Give em the week off and bring in one of Mackey or Valimaki until he’s ready.

He's already at a career high for NHL games in a season; otherwise he has 60 and 62 gp AHL seasons. If we want him to play 100 games this year it seems prudent to skip this 1 game trip.

And the team has been remarkably healthy with our top 15 skaters missing 1 game or less. They could actually use the experience of parachuting someone in for a game.

Concussion training in youth sports is almost useless, but I do recall that sometimes symptoms seem to clear quickly but then return later. I hope he takes a game or two off and we get another LD up here in the mean time. Season going well so why not get someone else some experience in case we need if for the run and Kylington gets some needed recovery time. Win. Win.

Even if what Sutter said is true, that the main force of the contact was neck/shoulder, you can still be concussed from that. It's about how the brain jostles within the cranium causing bruising/bleeding. No direct contact is necessary.



If I was Kylington or the team doctors, I'd be looking very closely for any symptoms for the next few days. Taking the game on Tuesday off is just prudent, even if he seems fine right now.

He’s an incredibly agile and slippery skater, but I agree he often looks a bit chaotic. Why he left his feet on that play I have no idea. No way Hartman picked him up and threw him. Just a bizarre play all around

Wish OK all the best in his recovery. It was terrifying seeing him falling in such an awful way. He is such a young and promising player for the team. Pray for his speedy recovery.

I get the sense that Darryl was just downplaying the significance of the injury like he is oppositional with everything else. Thankfully in the last decade, the process for concussion screening and re-entry into game play has improved, with less control by the coach (who isn’t, and should not be expected to be, a doctor).

On a less relevant topic, I can’t imagine how insulting it would be for Stone to spend the entire year preparing himself to help the team in an emergency need, but instead of him they continue playing a recently pretzeled and possibly concussed guy in a game that will most likely be quite physical.

Definitely seems to skate on the very edge of control, a very risk vs reward style.

In this case, I think he was trying to spin counterclockwise (on the TV angle) to get away from Hartman. Problem was Hartman had his stick tangled up and held so as Kylington started to spin, that resistance from him not able to spin freely had his hand both stick and ride ride up the stick and have his body twist, and end up in the awkward position.

I think there is a good chance that Stone will not get to play even if Kylington is out. Stone plays the right side, and I would expect they will want a LHD in Kylington's place.
