Ukraine is reportedly furious that the EU sanctions package did not include SWIFT sanctions.

I'd be furious too. Their only real chance here is to delay Russia for as long as possible and you have other countries half-assing any support they offer.

They should be. Those sanctions were a joke. Nothing that would potentially cause even the slightest discomfort to Germany as a result of their lack of foresight. If I'm China and I'm seeing this response, while I'm not planning on Taiwan immediately, I'm definitely saying "We can do this".

EU also announcing 1.3B Euro aid package to Ukraine, France will add an additional 300M to that. Frances package to include arms. Unclear what EU includes. Live broadcast from BBC straight from EU commission emergency meeting

This just makes me sad.
I hate to say it, but surrender is probably the best option. Some terrible things will happen and human rights most certainly will be violated severely but it will give the rest of the world time to make a plan and wait for Putin to slip up at some point and bring him up on war crimes. At least more of the Ukrainian citizens will live to fight another day.

You have to assume that the Lockheed and Racal have significantly tweeked their electronics and missile guidance systems as well in the last few years

Thankfully China has their own foresight problems and Taiwan is an island. China only had a fraction of the necessary amphibious assault landing craft needed to attack Taiwan. New craft will take years to build and US will be squawking about it far in advance so Taiwan has time to prepare + heavily mine the straits.
Not to mention Japan and South Korea and the wider world has a far greater strategic interest in Taiwan and they have committed to come to Taiwans defense. China controlling the straits there would squeeze those two countries supply lines and the word depends on Taiwan semiconductor.

It feels like things are going fairly well for Ukraine so far in terms of being like a nest of vipers. But we're in the opening days. my gut is that they're still going to get crushed by the sheer weight of the Sovie . . . errr Russian Military and without serious re-enforcement and supply they'll just get worn out. It also feels like there's not much help coming except for Weapons and ammunition, which won't be enough. I doubt the Russians are going to back off on this. They'll just send in more troops.

Growing up during the Cold War, the Soviets were always portrayed as the aggressor in western media, and at the time being a young impressionable child thought nothing of it.
After some maturing and years, and interacting with some really amazing Russian people, I had looked back at that, and dismissed it as widespread propaganda, and that the leadership of USSR/Russia were no more hardline or extremist than any western nation.
I'm pissed Putin invading a sovereign nation is making me question that.

Yes, logistical problems are the main issue for China taking Taiwan, but I think this situation shows clearly that the international cost is going to be absorbable. The world is reliant on China much more than they are on Russia, and if they go this limp on Russia, what do they do as punishment for China?
The other tactical problem is how does China take Taiwan without destroying the jewel in the crown in those chip manufacturing centers. Not exactly the type of buildings where you can just clean up some bomb damage and get back to work.

Frick the EU commission saying they are working to make sure they have reliable supply of gas to make it through winter says it all about sanctions package. It's limited right now cuz Germans can't endure the immediate suffering if Putin turns off the taps.
Sad.

I know that this is just a thought experiment, but NATO is primarily a European alliance and Ukraine is part of Europe. It would be more like if Mexico wanted to join an alliance with other Latin American countries, so I would say have at her.
Just for argument's sake, Mexico actually has a legislated policy of non-intervention and self-determination and hence doesn't join military alliances. They even refused to sign the multi-country peace treaty with Japan at the end of WW2 and instead drafted their own separate agreement.
Also, Mexico has one major land border which also happens to share with one of the world's largest markets. Like with Canada, it is a huge benefit and why neither country would totally alienate themselves from the West.

Sorry, I couldn't resist a gentle teasing.
I hope it isn't a mass slaughter. I don't know that I would want to just roll over right away either though.
