What a hockey player thinks about all of this is simply not important enough to take up this much of peoples' time.

a friend just told me that the Kyiv airport is back under Ukrainian control?

Jeez. Wouldn't that me a modern day miracle for little Ukraine to hold up the evil Russian bear. I know it's fantasy stuff based on numbers but bigger upsets have happened. Think 2004 when the Flames beat the Lightning in game 6.

Reading through this thread and some of the comments, I really don't think a lot of Canadians realize just how privileged we are.

Yeah sounds like it. The Russian heli troops weren't able to be re-enforced and eventually got overwhelmed

The airport that has rebuffed the Russian attack is Antonov airport, also called Gostomel airport, which is a cargo airport near Kiev. It isn't the international airport that services Kiev - that apparently is Boryspil airport. I haven't seen any news about Boryspil. There's also an airport really close to the center of Kiev apparently, I assume that one's not been attacked, given its location.

More effectively spread fear before really pushing the offensive?

I've been pondering the outcomes, and while a forthcoming Cold War 2.0 or WW3 are certainly possibilities, my gut tells me that the result will be total mutiny by the Russian Military. It may take time for it to get organized, but all the factors seem to be leading to it. It won't be a public assemby of dissenting factions, but rather a surgical reversal of Moscow's influence by honourable people presently in positions of military power. Russia doesn't have the absolute indoctrination or total censorship of a place like North Korea or The Third Reich... rather their populace is well aware of the corruption and authoritarian manipulation and simply waiting for a catalyst. I believe we are about to see the second Russian Revolution. The Russian state's greatest strength - its nuclear capability - is only an asset in international diplomacy. The thought of a nuclear civil war is unfathomable, and that very fact is what will cause them to finally be ready for the Perestroika that was once promised, yet never delivered.

Or maybe that's all just the optimist in me speaking.

I got secondhand anxiety last night just seeing the images and hearing the accounts of people in Ukraine and putting myself in their position.

Reached out to my family and friends and checked in on them just as I would if it was happening here.

Suddenly (at least for a few hours) hockey, the COVID/mandate stuff, none of it mattered.

I didn't even want to participate in the E=NG thread.

If there are people here that didn't experience at least a little bit of that too, then they're either wired differently from how am, or they just don't have the same appreciation for how precious our secure and gratuitous lifestyles are in North America.

I don't know if I envy or pity those individuals.

A major conflict during the social media information age. Hard to find victories and defeats after one day. This could last a very long time unfortunately.

Welp, this isn't a great sign.

In the Weibo post, Horizon News stated that any content painting Russia unfavorably would not be published. The same applied to any pro-Western framing, according to The Post.

"Simply put, China has to back Russia up with emotional and moral support while refraining from treading on the toes of the United States and European Union," Ming Jinwei, a senior editor at the Xinhua News Agency, wrote in a WeChat blog cited by The Post. Xinhua is the official press agency of the Chinese government.

"In the future, China will also need Russia's understanding and support when wrestling with America to solve the Taiwan issue once and for all," the editor later added.

If the footage is decent you can tell. For example this title says Russian planes but they're clearly Ukrainian

One has to ask oneself, if the scripts were flipped and say Russia wanted to form a military alliance with say Mexico, how would us Canadians/Americans feel about it?

Keep in mind, 65535 is the maximum possible value in bit 16, so the real level could be much higher.

Good point, we probably would make up rumors of Mexicans committing genocide against Americans and then invading. Totally
