Thank goodness there are other things to do in life to get away from the madness that is this place sometimes.
It's been a pretty heated debate for the last couple of years. I don't think you were alone in defending him at all. I generally find people that think they are some sort of "lone voice" on a subject, are that way because they are only paying attention to what they themselves are saying.
There has been a huge range of opinion on Johnny over the last few years.

lol

If Johnny was playing this good the last couple of seasons not nearly as many people would have been suggesting to trade him.

And that's not taking into account the biggest reason many wanted to trade him, and that's due to asset management and the fact he was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this off season, and still is.

Yeah there’s definitely plenty of Gaudreau supporters. I mostly just meant that the sheer volume of posts and trade proposals trying to get Johnny out was overwhelming. I basically gave up even trying because it felt so futile. I always figured if Gaudreau was traded he’d probably crush it elsewhere and this place would go bananas anyway, so might as well just wait for that.

But full kudos to Gaudreau and his linemates for a one heck of a performance so far this season. I suspected that the offensive explosion we saw from him to end last season could be repeated, but I’ve definitely been surprised at the quality of his defensive game. His line has basically become a premier shutdown line that can outscore just about anyone 5 on 5.

Johnny was playing with Ritchie, Simon, Monahan, ect

He started dominating the league again the second he was put on a line with other high end players

He's also playing better, no two-ways about it. This is easily the best Gaudreau we've ever seen. Strong play at both ends of the ice and no pouty b*tch face every second shift.

Well again a couple things
- As someone that was advocating to trade him, I certainly didn't feel like that view had a lot of support. But this is where we all operate in our own flawed echo chambers
- As others have said, the desire to trade him had as much to do with contract status as it did performance. Amplified by the fact that prior to this season, the team didn't seem to be going anywhere. So the idea of re-stocking to trigger a re-build or reset had merit.

Lots has changed this season. I don't think we need to spend much time trying to figure out who was more right or more wrong.

The real problem is that it took this long for the Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk line to be used together permanently. They looked fantastic together for that short stint dating all the way back in 2019 but, then this organization decided to revert back to the broken Gaudreau-Monahan duo once again. All we ever heard from coaching and management was that depth was the answer, when it turned out that it was the opposite. They needed to load it up front and then all the other pieces fell into place.

I didn't mean to open a can of worms on Johnny here y'all, I was simply indicating that it's not entirely valid to criticize ESPN for that article when our own fan base was so divided about his play pre season. Obviously he looks like he's one of the best wingers/forwards in the game this season.

Wait, wut??

If the Oilers are going to trade for a goalie, one assumes they'll move out Koskinen and his cap hit to one of the 16 teams that aren't covered by his no-trade clause. Money in, money out. And no one is taking Mike Smith off their hands, which means it's Koskinen who likely goes.

Greiss, Korpisalo, or Khudobin seem like the most plausible options. None are significant upgrades, though Khudobin isn't that far removed from his cinderella run. Maybe Halak, but he has a full NMC.

Greiss especially based on Holland's DET connection. It will be fun if the next Red Wings dynasty ends up powered by EDM picks

I think that's not entirely true. As fans, we always look for black / white explanations for things, or it's this or that........when it can actually be both.

I think that both depth and loading up front are both the answer. We couldn't have loaded up front without also getting the depth, which we haven't had in previous years.

One can't short change just how important the following factors have been:
- Mangiapane continuing is progress to a legit consistent threat.
- Addition of Coleman into our roster
- General improvement of the entire forward roster's overall game under Sutter.

Without these (and now the addition of Tofoli) the ability to put Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Lindholm on one line wouldn't be there. The remaining 3 lines would be so weak, we wouldn't have succeeded. The team was likely forced to try and achieve more depth by creating the two duos Monahan / Gaudreau, and Lindholm / Tkachuk to have chance. Which also clearly didn't work.

Anyway, the point being, it's not that the thought depth was required to succeed before was wrong, and it's not that we are succeeding this year because we went top heavy. It's the fact that we now for the first time have both that I think is the key.

I don’t think anyone advocating a trade like Johnny for Konecny+ was saying they were equivalent players or anything. A lot was premised on the assumption that Treliving coudn’t get a deal done with JG. In which case, you do the best you can. Two things have changed - JG’s play has improved markedly, and IMO the view of him staying has improved.

A fair number of people felt Philly wouldn't trade Konecny for Johnny straight-up

Flames fans (here anyway, and I find similar elsewhere) are weirdly negative about Flames players. Much more so than the fans of most teams (and literally the opposite of Oiler fans)

Two seasons ago Konecny produced similar offensive numbers as Johnny, was seen as a better defensive player and had a much better contract all while being a few years younger. He was trending up while Johnny was trending down.

It wasn't just certain Flames fans that thought he was worth more.

I've always defended Gaudreau. IMO he's one of the all-time great Flames players. However as you know we have discussed numerous times over the years that the best thing the Flames could have done is trade him before he became a free agent because I feel he's probably going to sign out east (hope to be wrong of course). That wasn't done so I'm just appreciating what could be his last season as a Flame in isolation and in the offseason will will focus on what the team should have done. As good as this season has been, if the team gets eliminated in the 1st round, I'm sure a lot of people will come out of the woodwork like Francis and rip on Gaudreau saying you can't win with him in the playoffs whether it's his fault or not. If that's the case then I look forward to the opinion of those fans when the team's best player is playing for another team and the Flames are struggling offensively.

He had one really good season. A single 61 point season compared to a player that's been essentially a point a game over 500 games. There were fans here saying he was straight up the better player. I laughed then as I laugh now.

Apparently Nils Hoglander could be on the move.

Top comment on the reddit hockey thread was a flames fan asking when he was landing in calgary. That... did not go over well with the vancouver fans lol.

I'm sure there were people that thought he was a better player, but there are also people that think the earth is flat.

Most people that I saw thought that when you factored in age and contract, Konecny might be worth more.
