I would have to believe that at least a couple teams out of 20 would have a desire for Mikael Backlund for 2 years at $5.35M.
Dude is constant as the northern star.

Key leader in the room also.
I would much rather find ways to trade Monny before trading Backs. Backlund should retire a Flame.

With Claude Giroux and Ristolainen UFA's at the end of the year Philly conveniently has a lot of cap room at a convenient time, but I think a lot can happen between now and next season and we can worry about it in the offseason.
So no, we can't really talk about it productively right now.

It's nice that Gaudreau isn't the only quality player slated for UFA in the offseason. Forsberg, Kadri, Hertl could take some attention away from Gaudreau or be pursued by the Flames.

if Johnny doesn't re-sign, it'd be great if they took a run at Forsberg. Moar Swedes!

everyone keeps saying this but when you look at the Flyers next year they have $68M in salary so $13M in cap space to sign 8 players.
what am i missing here?

Its close to where he grew up.
That said - I would love to see some data on free agents and if close to home is really that important for players.
I don't recall a ton of Alberta players signing in Calgary unless we paid up.

If you don’t think Tkachuk is going to sign in Calgary long term, you trade him this summer.

oh i understand the part about close to home, what i don't understand is where people think they have the space to sign him unless he takes the biggest pay cut.

They’ll find a way to offload JVR, which will free up another $7 mil. If we’re assuming the Flames will find a taker for Monahan, I don’t see how the Flyers will have any trouble moving JVR.

No they don't. They have 10 players signed for a total of $68M. They need to sign 13 players and have $13.2M to sign all of them.

Not sure how it would all work out, but would it be allowed to negotiate two different contracts with Mangi / Tkatchuck / Kylington right after the season?
Not sure what the numbers would look like exactly, but for example
June 30th, Sign Tkchuck to 1 year ~$7.5M then July 13th Sign him to 7 year $9.5M
Similar with the other two, you could probably save like $5M for the first year then replacing Lucic/Monahan or renegotiation their contracts should save you $7M - $8M the next season.

Most teams are up against the cap every year. And most teams seem to be in the "they only have $10M to sign 10 players next year" camp. And yet, most teams figure it out each year.
Vegas was up against the cap, yet the traded for Pietrangelo. And some how they made it work. Then there was talk that they were in on Eichel, and people said no chance. Yet here we are.
Teams make it work. Sometimes it means moving out some players, but it gets done. Who knows - people get injured, people retire, people get traded.
I am not going to worry about next year until next year.

The cap can be manipulated.

If Gaudreau has his heart set on Philly and if Philly wants it, there’s nothing that can be done about it. But there are probably a ton more factors and Calgary is in a position to offer the most money.
But yeah, the cap can be manipulated, which applies to Calgary as well as Philly. And yeah, Johnny would be IMO the best UFA talent out there, he also plays a position for which most teams prefer not to spend the most money. I doubt the offers he gets will be a whole lot different from each other. Calgary’s extra year, any success he’s had and his enjoyment of the city and his teammates may win out.

As a married man may I offer a suggestion: Never buy your wife a gym membership. Actually, never buy any woman a gym membership. You may offer to pay for it after she joins. But don’t bring it up first.
