A combined cap hit of 6.25 mill for Toffoli and Jarnkrok makes it so Calgary only has to shed about a mill to make it work.

Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Monahan - Toffoli
Coleman - Backlund - Jarnkrok
Lucic - Ruzicka - Dube
Lewis, Richardson

Waivers/Taxi - Ritchie, Pitlick (potentially included in a trade?)

Crazy deep forward lineup that has scoring threats throughout.
Phase 1 completed.

Excellent!

I think McCann could really push this team over the top. His speed and finish would add so much to this already great lineup!
McCann sounds like a great player to puck up but I'm not sure why Seattle would want to trade McCann. He's only 25, their leading scorer and only an RFA.

You'll see pending UFAs Jarnkrok, Johansen and Giordano dealt before they consider trading McCann.

So the larger deal may have involved Chairot.

For once I'm glad the Flames have no cap space.

Friedman also saying he thinks that the Flames tried to get Chiarot included in the deal but he is unsure if the injury or the price is why it fell apart.

Can someone explain to me the appeal of Chiarot?

I just don't get Chiarot, unless the plan is to maybe start rotating Zadorov and Gudbranson in and out of the lineup as needed. The top four seems really set. I can see us wanting a depth d for playoff insurance, but Chiarot is not that.

He has strong underlying numbers if you ignore this season.

I guess he's got good size and is a competent defenceman.

To me he's 100% a #7 defenceman on this team unless you're looking to move Zadorov to that spot...but with Zadorov's recent play, how do you do that?

I don't get the mad hunt for an additional defenceman. Maybe at the deadline for an additional body?

Hanifin
Andersson
Tanev
Kylington
Gudbranson
Zadorov
Stone
Valimaki
Mackey

...are we trying to add a player to push Zaddy or Stone further down the depth chart? I don't get it, and I really don't get it if the idea is to kick Kylington out of the lineup.

Sutter said the following about the Canadiens during their run to the finals:
"Tremendous confidence and composure of Price running off on teammates. Big D closing gaps and making it hard to get inside. Balanced attack with playoff-proven vets, sprinkle fresh legs and off to the conference finals."

I'm guessing Chiarot was one of those big D who really impressed him.

Am still glad we didn't trade for him though. No room here unless we move Zadorov out.

I don't get Chiarot either, but I also didn't get Zadarov or Gudbranson either really, so maybe he'd be a stud in Sutter's system.

But that leads to the next thing I don't get about it....if they did acquire Chiarot who in the hell comes out of the line up so he can play? The D is rolling right now, not really as weak link out there. And the rumored price would be way too much for what would essentially be a 6/7 d-man

I don't get it from Calgary's perspective. If you're a team in need of a #5 or #6 depth guy then sure, but I really don't see what he brings that Gudbranson, Zadorov, or even Stone can't.

And the rumoured ask of a 1st round pick is insanity.

Wasn't Chiarot a beast last year for MTL? Lead the team in TOI in the playoffs...

Agreed. It’s the cost that makes it a concern most of all. Chiarot would be a great add but at the price Montreal wants, I don’t think it’s worth it.

Come trade deadline, if the flames have kept rolling like this, I could see Treliving getting another bruising defenseman. If the flames have their playoff position really well settled, they could start cycling the heavy guys (Zadorov, Gudbranson, Stone, and *blank) in and out of the line up in a rotation. Win or lose, guys would take their turns resting for a game. Would throw in some of the other defencemen (Hanifin, Kylington, Andersson and Tanev) into the mix of rest if they ever need it.

Makes it so the guys are sitting not because they have played a poor game but because Sutter wants everyone at the right level of sharp (by playing games) and rested (by sitting for some games).

Steinberg asked Friedman if the Flames could revisit Chiarot. Friedman speculated (he cautioned that he hasn't talked to Treliving yet) that Chiarot's price no longer makes sense for the Flames.

He said there are a lot of d-men on the market and if the Flames were to pay another 1st, it wouldn't be for a rental.

I can see BT wanting to add a LS Dman that has experience before the TD.

It wont be to drop anyone down either but to rotate with Zadorov and fill in if injury occurs.

Thats not a knock on Valimaki or Mackey, but he wont want to be adding them right into an NHL playoff series.

They have Stone to fill in on the right...just need a similar kind of vet for the Left side now.

Both Sutter and Treliving have commented before that you need 8 NHL defensemen in your system if you want to make a playoff run. Because you have to be able to ice a reliable blue line even if 2 starting d-men get injured.
