Again, are you going for stats or trying to win?

The two don't always go hand in hand.

Oiler people still seem unable to grasp this, unbelievably.
Plus, whereas the Flames filled the hole on their roster, the Oilers didn't touch any of their holes when they acquired Kane.

And...speaking of holes; as always, E=NG

Can anyone think of the last time the flames made a big acquisition for a playoff run like this during the season? They’ve been close on a bunch the last few years and even pulled one off in the Kadri trade except he nixed it with his NTC.

The last one that I can think of would be Jokinen. That was a huge acquisition at the time.

This is most reminiscent of '09, except this time we're the Blackhawks with home ice.

Henieman might still turn into something, but he isn't lighting up the Swedish league as a 20 year old.

Pitlick was a head scratcher when Treliving acquired him and he struggled to fit into this roster. Good to get that effectively dead cap off the books.

Edit: Wrote Swiss instead of Swedish.

I'd say things worked out pretty, pretty good...

Also, I am having trouble following the first sentence. It's steep if the Flames don't tank? Firstly, tanking implies on purpose, which is not going to happen.
Secondly, I think you mean it's steep if the Flames do falter and the pick ends up high...
If I recall, Flames gave up a 1st rounder on a trade for a D-man and frickin tanked to near the bottom. Who would've expected the Flames to give away a high draft pick before the trade happened. So, that sentence made very good sense. As for Markstrom, I'm still not totally sold on why Tre needed to get him when there are cheaper options. I think implying that Markstrom is a savior on this team as compared to Kipper wouldn't be fair to what the players are doing in front of their goalie at this point in time.

Man, what that 09 team could've done if Gio, Dion and Regehr weren't various shades of severely injured.

I think Lindholm Backlund Monahan Ruzicka is probably on par with ROR/Schenn/Bozak/ whoever played 4th line that year. And Calgary has better wingers than they did.

Yes, it was Jokinen in 2009.

The only "big" in-season trade since then was Bourque for Cammalleri, but that wasn't really a load-up for the playoffs type deal.

Oh, Dim Jim, we'll miss you.
We’re gonna get Miller, Horvat or Garland somehow.

I don't think we were well enough structured in our game to overcome the Hawks in that series, even with a better blue line..

If I recall correctly we were trying to run and gun against prime Kane & Toews.

But we did push them 6 games without those key guys. Too bad we were a terrible road team during those years.

Cammy, Iginla and Jokinen though - a powerplay unit's dream.

Kind of off topic, but didn't the Bourque / Cammalleri trade come on the heels of Kelly Hrudey just tearing into Bourque on HNIC? I might have this wrong but I remember Hrudey just ripping him apart and the trade to get Squid back coming pretty quickly afterwards.
