Great move. I'm glad the roster was kept in tact and they are taking the risk to go for a deep run. There aren't many windows to go for it but it seems appropriate this year. Great job by Treliving.

It's cool, sometimes we can cut our neighbours to the North a break. Let them think we're making a mistake on this "mediocre" team as it's likely the only reprieve they get from their agonizing existence.
They go out and get "THE" UFA forward in Zach Hyman.
...we sign Blake Coleman to a more reasonable deal.
They spent two 2nd round picks on 9 games of Andreas Athanasiou
...we trade a 1st, a B prospect, a 5th and a dump for 2.5 years of Tyler Toffoli
We sign Jacob Markstrom
...they extend a 400 year old belly flopper
We hire Darryl Sutter
...they hire Jay something or other
We sign Chris Tanev
...they pay Nurse $9.25M

Yes a lot of players took discounts that year. Teams simply didn't have the cap-space with the cap not increasing. Hoffman signed a 1 year $4M. Barry for $3.75M. The bottom line is that a lot of bargain deals were signed and we get 3 of them in Markstrom, Tanev, and Toffoli. It's funny that they were all playing for the Canucks the year before too.

It's a fair number of assets to give up. But it does offer the chance at a big time upgrade to the forward ranks that the team does need.
My old world brain that judges more on feel than analytics thinks this is a good move and a good fit. Last year I was pretty critical of some of the Flames spending where I thought Tafoli's price seemed well within reach where the team could have made a play to sign him. Of course not knowing all the factors that resulted in him picking Montreal. So I am happy to see him on the team today. Hopefully he's in line for back to back cup runs and will see a better result this time.

Not really...mostly a mixture between "this is what Holland should be doing" and "it doesn't matter, they're losing Tkachuk and Gaudreau next year anyway".
As I mentioned in the E=NG thread, even one saying all they need to do is trade Kassian to free up cap space. Problem solved.

Holding out hope for a 3rd line center, if they can somehow shed Monahan. Need more from that spot, though you give Monahan a couple weeks with a new line mate to see if that's all that was missing.

Yeah...hard to argue with adding a player like Toffoli without changing or moving anyone of the Game Day lineup.
Kind of like what the Oilers did with Kane, except good.

Coiler Reddit:. Flames just gave up a 1st, 5th, and good prospect for a top 6 forward. Oilers signed a top 6 forward for free. Somehow, that's a loss for Holland?

This is by-far the biggest in-season acquisition since Treliving became the GM, and probably the team's biggest since Jokinen in 2009 (the Bourque-Cammalleri deal is the only other one that comes close, but they both needed a fresh-start at that time).

If Toffoli can somehow revive Monahan, that's a double win.

It's really funny that they think it's a foregone conclusion that Gaudreau is set on 10M+ and is signing elsewhere and Tkachuk is holding out to become a St Louis Blue.
They're in for a rude awakening when both guys are extended.

Honestly, a very good trade for Calgary. didn't give up any roster players or top prospects...
this is exactly the kind of player you need for a playoff push

We have finally addressed this organizations biggest positional need. RHS RW to play in our top 6!
Toffoli also has a wicked one-timer which will improve the 2nd PP unit (if placed there)
I've been calling for this trade for months. I am so excited that Treliving pulled the trigger and made this team better.
