I wonder if McDavid fired the coach because they can’t find a goalie fast enough…

Hitchcock is another coach that has had a ton of success by getting teams to play within a strong defensive structure.
800+ wins
8 division titles
Stanley Cup
No success in Edmonton.

McDavid is their problem. He is not captain material... he is not built for it, doesn't have the character to do it. He doesn't do it by leading by example as he plays selfish one-way hockey. As long as he is the captain, there will be no leadership on that team. The culture problems on that team are his responsibility, and from what I can intuit from interviews, play, etc. it is a responsibility he does not want, but is stuck with.

McDavid trade demand checklist:
- Fire another coach CHECK
- Fail to bring in an A goalie at deadline
- Fail to make playoffs
- Lose draft lottery
Who overpays on draft day for him?

Interesting analysis from a Condors fan. Bolded parts are mine
Quote:
Oilers and Condors fan bcurlock @bcurlock on Woodcroft’s tactics in Bakersfield of the AHL:
A much different shape to the structure. Assuredly they will go to a 2-1-2 narrow forecheck where F3 stay high and in the middle of the ice…This will be a challenge for 97 and 29. 71 will get this quick as he’s the only one doing it now.
The NZ will oscillate between a 1-1-3 and a 1-3-1. The choice seems to be opponent dependent. Again this will be a challenge for 97 and 29, but a massive help to this D corp who simply face too many large gaps currently and who don’t have the footspeed to handle attacks.
The Dzone will be most fascinating because Woodcroft and Manson expect C support low at all times. This runs completely counter to the Oiler Dzone who use a first man back approach that devolves into the swarm quite often. 29 will be excellent. 97 will be challenged.

Wonder if 97 (McDavid) and 29 (Draisaitl) will buy-in to the changes
(Commentator’s voice: No they won’t)

They acquired Keith, signed Kane, maybe Q is not outside their limits.

I think the GM is a big part of the problem. He had a terrible off-season with a series of weird moves that didn't address the actual problems.
Going into the season with Mike Smith as your number 1 with a back-up you didn't have confidence in is nothing short of idiotic.
And then the Duncan Keith move over the top to use up some of the cap space you DID have.
Just awful.

He was on the Oilers' broadcast the other day. I was a bit shocked at how much he's aged. Looked much older than I expected.

All I can get
|
McDavid's agent can quietly "leak out" a trade demand, thereby ensuring the cratering of the Oilers' season. This guarantees below-market value.
Could this even happen by trade deadline? Unlikely, but it would buy time to rebuild fan confidence in the off-season.

Evander Kane got his coach fired after 5 games.
That's actually kind of impressive...

The Oilers have run through every kind of coach - rookies like Eakins, old warhorses like Hitchcock, big names like McLelland, insiders like MacT, through the ranks like Nelson, defensive guys like Tippett, it just never works.

The Smith signing is hilarious in every regard.
Signing him for 2 years and more than $2 million per season, like who were they bidding against for his services?
Keith was also pretty funny. A player with some name recognition wanted to go to Western Canada and that was all that mattered to them, regardless of how effective he was anymore or how much he fit a need for the team. Trade for him at any cost. It was a PR move to try and make it look like Edmonton was desirable. The same thought process probably played into signing Kane.

The top tier talent they have and the fact the in division competition is not nearly as strong as it could be is the biggest thing. Even if they underperformed they shouldn't be this bad. The goaltending and depth is a problem but it's on the players that things are this bad.
Until the top guys start buying into 5-5 play being important, they aren't going anywhere.

When does McDavid get a no-trade clause? I believe he is close to it, and it would make sense that he closes his mouth until then to be sure to get some say in where he goes.
I suspect he'd like to go to a big market to get endorsement deals. His second choice might be a market that he doesn't have so much pressure. I can't imagine he'll want to go to a small market with immense pressure again.
