I guess, but I never felt like Gio's shots towards the end were getting anywhere. Plus, we're not seeing Kylington get the ice time he gets if Gio was still here. You and I both know that. I would rather be giving the PP time to Kylington and Hanifin. Both have looked rather confident with the puck on their stick as of late.

To Montreal: Dillon Dube, 2022 2nd round pick (FLA)
To Calgary: Tyler Toffoli
Dillon hasn't been able to take a next step under Darryl, and appears to have stalled a bit. Toffoli is the better player today, but his utility is being aged out in the tire fire of Montreal, so they get younger (with potential) with Dube, and gather a 2nd round pick as a sweetener.
To Seattle: Tyler Pitlick, 2022 1st round pick (CGY), 2022 2nd round pick (CGY), 2023 3rd round pick (CGY)
To Calgary: Mark Giordano (50% retained), Jared McCann (50% retained)
Giordano's desire to return to Calgary gets done by good guy Francis while he brings back a 1st rounder. Jared McCann for Pitlick, a 2nd and a 3rd may be a light return for McCann, who is an RFA after this season and having a strong season...so maybe more needed?
That would give us:
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
McCann - Backlund - Coleman
Mangiapane - Monahan - Toffoli
Lucic - Ruzicka - Lewis
Ritchie
Hanifin - Andersson
Kylington - Tanev
Giordano - Gudbranson
Zadarov
It fits within the cap limitations come deadline day.
The PP after these moves:
PP Unit 1: Gaudreau - Monahan - Tkachuk - Giordano - Lindholm
PP Unit 2: 5 of McCann/Coleman/Backlund/Mangiapane/Lucic/Hanifin/Andersson/Kylington
|
I like the idea of Toffoli, but I would rather get that deal done without including Dube.
Despite the lacklsuter production Dube has made big strides with the underlying numbers in his game. He is getting hit hard with a low PDO this year. Moving him would be a classic sell low move.

We need to move on from Gio. Great Flame, but its Sutters team now not Gio's.

I'll guess Gio to the leafs, not Flames.

I agree. Fantastic defenseman, had wonderful years here with a Norris trophy win to boot. From a leadership standpoint, he has not led his team(s) to success. The year we won a playoff series in 2015, he was injured.
I know the lack of team success is not squarely to blame on Gio alone, but if you're the captain, you have to find ways to carry the team on your back to play-off success. Worse teams in the past decade have had more playoff success than Calgary since 03/04. The chemistry this team has built under Sutter's leadership without Gio's presence is not something I want to tamper with. Nostalgia or not.
This coming from someone who has purchased and proudly wears a HC Gio Jersey from time to time.

I don’t know either. But he’s made $123million and is only owed $6million.

McCann + Gio for a 1st and some salary would actually be a solid trade for the Flames. I don't want Gio back either but if that was on the table it'd be done

I wonder what it would take to pry away Barzal from the Isles. I think now would be an opportunity to try and snag him if ever a time to do it. Offer them an Eichel type package.
Monahan, Dube, Valimaki, 2022 1st.

^That's not an Eichel type package.
If i'm NYI and you want Barzal I'm asking for Elias+
And if he's not available my starting position is Eat Bread+Coronato+unprotected 1st for 2023.

I really don’t think one bad season is going to spark a NYI rebuild where they dump their 1C.

Want him to add to Lindholm but I would do that all day and have mentioned it in other posts. I just don’t think he is available.

The Hockey Writers pick Colorado, Vancouver, and Calgary as possible destinations for Kasperi Kapanen.

I was a big Barzal fan but I’m not sure Lindholm is not a better all around centre.

Kapanen feels like a less expensive 'plan B' for Calgary if the Toffoli ask is too rich.

Calgary also has a few players that could spark some interest from the Penguins brass, including physical defenseman Nikita Zadorov, veteran pivot Trevor Lewis who Flames coach Darryl Sutter loves, and the versatile youngster in Dillon Dube.

I don’t see any way how they’d trade away Zadorov unless it’s a huge forward upgrade. I think they like being big and nasty with Gudbranson and Zadorov going into the playoffs

Yeah it doesn't make sense to me either, not without the Flames adding an additional piece to the back-end.
Hanifin
Andersson
Tanev
Kylington
Zadarov
Gudbranson
Stone
Valimaki
I don't think the team is comfortable subtracting any of those top 6 without adding another one. Having Valimaki and Stone be your 6/7 just doesn't seem like something this coach/this team would be comfortable doing ahead of a playoff run.

Always been a big Kapanen fan. He’s a great middle 6 guy. Decent wheels and hands, right hand shot, not afraid to be physical.

I can see Zadorov being moved to Seattle, if Giordano is a possibility to help out with the cap situation. Kraken can then flip Zadorov for some value as well.
