I haven't seen a lot of Brandon Hagel.
What's the scoop on him?

Holy crap, that would be a huge overpay for Petry considering the season he is having.

Poille is off his rocker if that would be the deal. Nobody is taking that deal and not sending money back.

Petry likely easily still a top 4 guy who has allowed the Montreal stink to wear him down.

I guess we will see.

Don't know how good Petry's knees are but I'm betting he just did a backflip if true.

Weber to Nashville benefits their cap structure? Or does his retirement still bite them?

Because it's a frontloaded contract and Nashville took advantage of the high salary years while dropping the low salary years. But now they're reacquiring the low salary years

For Nashville it's a bit of a weird move.

Feel like they are giving up more for Petry than they received for Ellis, and Ellis was the better player.

Probably didn't expect Duchene, Johansen, and Granlund to all have huge rebound years though.

The Weber transfer would have to play into this somehow. Although I'm not sure how retiring benefits Weber, instead of just going on LTIR. It will be interesting to see if this plays out as the speculation suggests, or if the guy just got lucky on the timing of his coach firing call.

I think it has to do more with them reacquiring Weber. If they're that willing to overpay to grab Weber then the recapture penalty must be lessened with him in Nashville.

Looking at Columbus' "all in" from a few years ago, and then random rumblings on Toffoli and earlier in the season on Giordano...The Blue Jackets went out and acquire Dzingel as well as Duchene and McQuaid. What would that sort of "all in" look like from a Calgary angle? Does this make sense:

To Montreal: Dillon Dube, 2022 2nd round pick (FLA)
To Calgary: Tyler Toffoli

Dillon hasn't been able to take a next step under Darryl, and appears to have stalled a bit. Toffoli is the better player today, but his utility is being aged out in the tire fire of Montreal, so they get younger (with potential) with Dube, and gather a 2nd round pick as a sweetener.

To Seattle: Tyler Pitlick, 2022 1st round pick (CGY), 2022 2nd round pick (CGY), 2023 3rd round pick (CGY)
To Calgary: Mark Giordano (50% retained), Jared McCann (50% retained)

Giordano's desire to return to Calgary gets done by good guy Francis while he brings back a 1st rounder. Jared McCann for Pitlick, a 2nd and a 3rd may be a light return for McCann, who is an RFA after this season and having a strong season...so maybe more needed?

That would give us:

Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
McCann - Backlund - Coleman
Mangiapane - Monahan - Toffoli
Lucic - Ruzicka - Lewis
Ritchie

Hanifin - Andersson
Kylington - Tanev
Giordano - Gudbranson
Zadarov

It fits within the cap limitations come deadline day.

The PP after these moves:

PP Unit 1: Gaudreau - Monahan - Tkachuk - Giordano - Lindholm
PP Unit 2: 5 of McCann/Coleman/Backlund/Mangiapane/Lucic/Hanifin/Andersson/Kylington

I'd rather just sign Gio for cheap in the offseason. I don't really have interest in spending assets for him when we have a decent top 6D. I know a lot of us aren't too big of fans of Zadorov but he isn't playing in the top 4.

Gio can’t be traded back to Calgary with retained salary unless it is via a third team

But having Giordano slide in on the 3rd pairing and 1st PP makes this team significantly better this season, and this team is trying to win a Cup this season.

Being patient isn't the play for this team at this stage.

Where do you see that? The only restriction I see is:

"If a team retains salary on a trade, they cannot reacquire that player for one year from the date of the transaction, unless the contract ends prior to one year. " from Puckpedia. Calgary did not retain salary on Giordano, nor was he traded.

With Weber, reacquiring him would probably make a lot of sense for Nashville.

If he retires this summer, the cap recapture for the Preds will be $6.1 million for the next 4 seasons, and there's no way they can work around that.

https://twitter.com/user/status/1415464565777715202

If they reacquire him and he LTIRetires, they would have to carry his full cap hit for the next 4 seasons, but could work-around it with LTIR space. In terms of real dollars, he's set to be paid $3 million next season and $1 million for each of the next 3 seasons, so it's not a huge expense for them (especially with escrow taken into account).

They could even buy him out, but the cap hit on that would be almost as much as his full salary and wouldn't be able to be worked-around either.

Why would he even retire rather than just staying on LtIR?

Why wpuld Seattle trade Mccan?? He is perfect age to stick around there when they might be competitive in a couple years.

Good lord I’m not giving up our 1st for Gio and McCann that would be an absolute travesty.
This teams identity without Gio in the room has been better, I don’t think he injects anything into the teams chances personally. Giving Kylington an opportunity because of Gio leaving has been a blessing in disguise.

Love Gio but he can come back for free and retire, not worth an asset like a 1st or 2nd or when we’re going to need to retool/rebuild from within given the contract status issues with Johnny and Tkachuk.

Hard pass

I will have to double check where I found it but I did read that players picked in expansion could not be traded back to their old team with retained salary in the first year

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense to leave money on the table, even if it is "only" $1 million per year.

Still, for the Habs, it makes sense to move his contract back to Nashville so the Preds can carry his cap hit and have to deal with the LTIR issues. It clears almost $8 million in cap space for the Habs and saves a few real dollars too.

I could also see him move into a front-office position with the Preds, so they'd probably want/need to reacquire him for that.
