I know people have a lot of time on their hands but talking about an easier path to Round of 16 is fairy tales at this point.
There is a chance we have our hands full with #70 El Salvador in qualifying in a day or so.
|
I hope this team of pros, some of who have real champions league experience, aren't going to Qatar wide-eyed and just happy to be there.
If R16 isn't the goal, then they are not doing their jobs.

I don’t necessarily disagree with anything in your post, all that other stuff is presumptive and might be jumping the gun. But this whole qualifying cycle has been a fairy tale so far, and it is fun to day dream of the possibilities to come

Kristian Jack was on Max Bretos' show for a good discussion of the affairs in CONCACAF.

So when we make the World Cup and score our first goal (if), we just pack up and go home? this team is better than "just happy to be here" at this point and it would be a complete disservice to themselves and all the hard work they have done if that was the mentality they had. We all know Herdman has them believing that this team can shock the world so why shouldn't we be embracing that as fans? it doesn't make the journey or the story of this squad any less sweet if they fall short in the end but we may as well enjoy the ride as much as possible while it lasts.

Realistically what is the gap between a middling team like Belgium and Canada?

Belgium is No.1 in world ranking currently. Not sure if they could be categorized as a middling team.

A better example would be Sweden and they would be pretty even. Lest we forget that the US is 11th in the world?
Again, we just took 8 points off the US and Mexico, the first team ever to not lose a game to them in the same qualifying cycle.

You play in any tournament at any level, the goal is to advance to the next round. That is 100% the goal for this team at the World Cup.

I think a lot of Canada fans are not ready to admit we have a good team. Hard to blame them after massive disappointments since forever, and for fear of jinxing it probably.
But Canada has arrived. Soak it in folks. Sometimes you only get a good team once in a generation. Let yourself believe.
Croatia went to the World Cup Final with a talented group of individuals and a manager they believed in.

Canada's win was still huge, and the US are still Concacaf heavyweights. But I do feel that the US ranking of 11th is extremely flattering to them as of late. That's taking nothing away from Canada though. The wins vs. Mexico and the US (and even Honduras and the like) are just not something that happens - until recently.
I am really looking forward to some friendlies against some "bigger" countries in the coming months. It will be a good measuring stick.

Monthly. The World Cup draw will probably take the April rankings.

But the formula is known, so they can unofficially be tracked in real time. This site has us 36th, and based on trend I think we're better than that.

Yes, the rankings formula is known but it's not a sure thing FIFA will use the rankings in it's final round draw. It was the procedure for 2018 but not previously. It was always geographical.
Until I see an official draw procedure for 2022 I don't trust FIFA.

I think one thing is for sure is that the excitement generated of a World Cup berth let alone any kind of success (and indeed the success already achieved) is going to spur a lot of kids wanting to play which is only good for the future of Canadian soccer.
