That's trade deadline rental deal money. You rarely keep the rental.
The issue is the summer. Guadreau 1.5-2 mil? Tkachuk 2 mil? Mangiapane 1-2 mil? Kjillingtons not playing for $750 next year either.
Zadorov and Pitlick free up a bit but not enough.
Rudzicka has spent 2.5 seasons "simmering" in the AHL.
If I'm not mistaken Rudzicka was a late cut in camp and one the of the first call ups this year. Sutter clearly likes the guy. He also been an upgrade, inexperience (12 games) or not, over Richardson (849 games). The 4th line is way more fun with him on it. They actually get a few scoring chances. He's a rookie and makes mistakes however clearly Sutter thinks there's something there regardless of what the fans here think.
I can see the team thinking ahead and developing Rudzicka on the 4th line this year to set him up in case Monahan is moved for cap space.

I think the Flames could add Laine as a 3rd line RW and a PP1 specialist. Flames have enough 200ft players what they really need is another weapon to score with.
If the price is right, you do it. But I also feel that Sutter would have Laine in the dog house in a week. So I guess there's that.
Jost is fascinating.
I still want Eberle and Jarnkrok. Just seems like the perfect mixture on RW. You lose Ritchie and one of Lewis or Pitlick. Which we all want to see.

Something I've been pondering, is if we see relatively no activity to add to the Flames, should we take that as management's sense of their ability to re-sign Tkachuck/Gudreau? I mean if they think next season is going to be tough, do they want to be shipping out any assets?
I guess that's a question for another thread.

No that could also mean they're afraid they're going to lose both, will be entering a rebuild/retool and will want their picks.

Absolutely, in my opinion. Actually, adding nothing of significance would only make much sense if they were reasonably confident that they are staying, making this not a last chance deal.
I would gladly take a year off at the draft if it means a stronger possibility of winning with a strong team which is also the best and perhaps only way to have gaudreau stay. A late first and a couple late seconds is absolutely worth a legit shot with this team and this coach.

Laine is the kind of guy who can't be "the guy" on the team. He needs to go to a team that has strong leadership. He would be a weapon in the right situation, which makes him tough to trade for. Also that contract is prohibitive.

Adding and getting swept is one thing, but if your team needs to take a step forward in its progression or is in all-in mode (PIT) then it can be more justified.
IMO this is an all-in year for Calgary. But in 2020 I vocally supported selling (though perhaps still acquiring cheaper replacements)

Why is this an all-in year for Calgary? Are they really on the cusp of greatness?
I think most fans would be happy with they winning a playoff round, winning two rounds would be awesome. Trading away their future for that just seems silly.

If not now then when...obviously the next month and a bit is huge
if the Flames are basically locked in a divisional spot they should got for it
I know the whole tank and draft thing people are stuck on but the Flames have two forwards in their 20s on pace for over 90/100 points.
Would be lucky to get that after tanking
Flames have the best first line in the entire league and one of the lowest goals against

The team has to take a big step forward, otherwise there is almost no point in keeping Gaudreau.
As has been mentioned, are Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Mangi, and Kylington going to improve relative to their AAV increases? Are Backlund/Lucic/Tanev/Markstrom likely to maintain/improve their production relative to AAV?
Continuing this path without improvement means betting on Dubé/Hanifin/Andersson/Valimaki/Lindholm to continue developing/improving outweighing the above's collectively decrease (at least relative to AAVs) and seeing some of Zary/Pelletier/Mackey/etc emerge.
Beyond that, the path out of the resurgence division is likely to get more difficult with LAK and ANA...VGK a bit more of a wildcard depending on Eichel.

The way I look at it is going all-in this year on some pieces for picks/futures makes sense to make the case for Gaudreau and Tkachuk to stay. If it blows up and Gaudreau walks in free agency, you can recoup the picks you dealt this year by moving Tkachuk at the draft/in the offseason.
Buying gives a jolt to this core, who've bought in on a deeper level to a team game than we've ever seen from them, and gives them a fighting chance to make some noise in the playoffs. It's also the definitive 'prove it' moment for this core and if they falter, leadership almost has to rebuild in some capacity with their two best scoring forwards walking out.

A question for me is the actual benefit that deadline deals add to playoff success. I can definitely think of a few that worked out: 2004 with the Flames, the kings with Sutter had some. I’m also recalling in recent years some teams loaded up only to get bounced early.
I agree that this team could do some damage but I also feel cautious about the actual benefit received and its longer term impact on the organization.

Thing with the Flames they have a very specific need
Right now they dominate nearly every single game...its hilarious, even the nights we think they got their asses kicked they win the fancy stats going away.
Flames with a couple more high end goal scorers would be a very tough out

Even 1…. 1 RW’r who can score. Don’t need to break the bank here, there are a couple of them in trade rumours or are rentals. I’m down for a rental as long as they aren’t a premium asset.

The 04 Flames are funny though. If Treliving added a winger who scored 2 goals all year (60 games), another who had scored 6 in 69 and another Lucic like guy, I don’t know the fans would be all that impressed. The only guy Flames fans had heard of at the time was Simon. Funny - the most well known guy in Simon had less impact than the other two (Neimenen and Nilson).

That team lost two key contributors in Reinprecht and McAmmond around the Deadline to injury as well. McAammond's 17 goals ended up 3rd on the team and he only played 64 games. Reinprecht when he did play had a messed up shoulder for the second half. So Nilsson and Simon were brought in to replace guys lost to injury as much as anything for a team that badly wanted to make the playoffs.
For this team making the playoffs isn't going to be a huge boost like it was to that one. This team needs to make it, plus win at least a round to generate enough to make it worth having made the deal.

Personally I'm not sure adding 2 forwards is the right use of the deadline cap space. I'd look to add one impact forward, and then call up Pelletier to fill the other spot.
I also think C vs W is a big question for the team in terms of what they focus on.
I think if they trade for a center then the best bet is to break up the top line:
Gaudreau - Hertl - Coleman
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Mangiapane
Dube - Monahan - Pelletier
Lucic - Backlund - Lewis
Or if they add a winger then you need to be confident with Monahan and Backlund as your 2 and 3 C going into the playoffs.
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Monahan - Toffoli
Dube - Backlund - Coleman
Lucic - Ruzicka - Lewis

Because all we ever heard is Johnny want to play in Phillie and Kchuck will want to go to St. Louis. If the team does nothing to show they want to win the cup these guys will leave for sure.
Winning a playoff round is not what these players play for. They want a championship. We need to go full out while these two guys and most of our other best guys are in their prime. I don't know the rules but can the team spend good money and some young assets or picks and then sign Johnny and Kchuck to contracts where they get paid big in the later years to keep within cap?

Hertl has played C and W FWIW. I think he’s better at C, but flexibility is a good thing.
