I don't know. Getting a center for center???? And Rudzicka is getting ice time and in some key situations. You have to trade Monahan for Cap Space so what are you getting back that's for sure going to be "better" than the guy you brought up from your own system.

Anyone else staring to get the impression that Rudzicka is being groomed to play 3rd line center to facilitate a Monahan trade? Mony IS playing better and other teams NHL scouts no doubt have noticed. Is Monahans little resurgence making him a more palatable trade chip? The team sure needs the cap space.

Center depth is a problem for the Flames. They should be trying to get stronger here, and in a big way. As bad as Monahan has been, Backlund has been worse. Both are troubling and need dramatic improvement. The Flames need to find new addresses for both of them and bring in better talent. Ruzicka may be able to find his way into one of those roles, but he's got a long way to go.

From CapFriendly regarding Flames cap-space on deadline day:
DEADLINE CAP SPACE: $5,558,250
So Tree is going to have space to add something significant, without really requiring the removal of anyone else.

I'm extremely hopeful that we can do Pitlick ++ for the add, giving us around 7 mil in room to play with without touching existing Dmen or trading Monahan.

40 games on the league's worst and lowest scoring team can do that to you. Reasons for hope:
- he's still playing ~23 mins a night
- his -7 is the best on the team among their regular D. Chiarot is -25 and Savard is -17. Interestingly, Chiarot has played 318 mins w/ JP and 301 w/ DS (EVS)
- clearly he's not terribly happy at the moment
I'm not saying I'd pay a big price, but he could be pretty valuable to a lot of teams. Similar to Wideman here through the rebuild and upswing.

DAL is in an interesting spot approaching TDL - a lot like the 19/20 Flames on the bubble with some juicy UFAs. IMO the smart play would be to maximize return on Klingberg, Radulov, Sekera, and a goalie while replacing them with buy-low bets as necessary.
For example (loosely based off the Savard TDL deal last year where he fetched a 1st+3rd and DET got a 4th for retention):
To Team X: Klingberg 75% retained
To MTL: X 2nd
To DAL: Petry, X 1st, X 4th

Not if he is traded twice, the intermediary team can retain an additional 50% of the remaining, hence 75% total retention.
That seems highly unlikely though, teams aren’t going to want to tie up dead cap space for 3 seasons.

I assume he meant the first team would retain 50%, and so would the 2nd team, resulting in a 75% total retention.

If Eric Staal has a good Olympics he could be an option for center depth.

Has Backlund really been worse? He's definitely not scoring at a very good clip, but I still trust Backlund a lot more to be able to play tough matchups against other teams top players a lot more than I would Monahan. For me Backlunds cap hit is a now expensive, but with Lindholm on a value deal, you should be able to manage it if you play him on a good third line with some P.K. time. Monahan can add a bit on the Powerplay, but at even strength he needs better linemates and some protection to play on a third line. Ruzicka... you hope he can be on the 4th line and add some production down there that has been lacking all year. In time maybe step up to a third line role eventually when Backlunds deal is done, which is likely what they had hoped for with Jankowski a few years back.
If there was anyway to bring in a better 2nd line center, and move out Monahan's cap hit to move Backlund to the third line, I expect the team would make a strong play for that. I just don't think that type of player is out there, or if that player is, there's a lot more teams further up the standings than Calgary who'll make a bid.

I still trust Backlund to match up against an opponent’s top line. No such trust in Monahan. In spite of his newly-minted commitment to playing an all-around game, Monahan still needs to be sheltered, and opposing coaches lick their chops at pitting their scoring lines against a line centred by him.

Has anyone done an analysis of the trade deadline and the percentage of teams that added rentals eventually regretted the deals?
I suspect the number would be in the 90% range.
I don't understand the ease in which some want the Flames to trade their first round pick and top prospects for players who would play less that a season here.
I doubt adding one player is going to make or break the Flames playoff success. The guys they have here will be the ones making or breaking their playoff success.

The only retention I’m suggesting is on Klingberg.
DAL gets picks and a Klingberg replacement at 3x6.25 instead of ~7x7.5

Yeah I tend to agree with rentals. Wouldn't mind a pickup with some term past this season however.
Miller (1 more year)
Toffoli (2 more years)
C. Brown (1 more year)
Konecny (3 more years)
Garland (4 more years)
Tippett (RFA)
Jost (RFA)
Laine (RFA)
Would all be interesting options to consider as this TDL, that aren't pure rentals.

I'd love to see Laine as a Flame long term. Exactly the type of player we need, and a guy who has to be looking for some stability going forward.
Previously rumoured to be looking to play hockey in a warm/beach city though.
...so, failing Laine I'll take Miller and Brown or Toffoli please.

The better question might be how many teams win the cup or even finals without TDL adds?
Adding and getting swept is one thing, but if your team needs to take a step forward in its progression or is in all-in mode (PIT) then it can be more justified.
IMO this is an all-in year for Calgary. But in 2020 I vocally supported selling (though perhaps still acquiring cheaper replacements)

I agree with a reluctance for rentals. Accordingly, since other trades are going to involve assets aside from picks, i.e. $$ going out, I think they should work on trades now instead of the TDL. TDL trades often don’t work because the new guys don’t have enough time IMO.

Hard pass on Laine. The guy seems to be incredibly unmotivated. For a guy who's skillset has been compared to Ovechkin he sure seems to lack any emotion in his game at all. I think Laine will always be remembered as a 'what could have been' type of story. I'd prefer Miller of the names out there.

Good description of his career to date. The only question is whether Darryl is the one person who can push the right buttons to turn him from a potential superstar into the real thing. And this club maybe more than any other has a potential spot for him in the lineup that would allow him the opportunity to become that superstar if Sutter can get him motivated.
He's definitely a buy low reclamation project at this time. I would take a flyer on him, but would not be prepared to give up multiple high-end assets to acquire him.
